Those windows in the background… I don’t think I’ve had to struggle with Illustrator so much before. It took me more than an hour making such a simple adjustment to the windows because Illustrator had to fight me with every click made. However, the rest of the comic was a lot of fun to make. As you can see I’ve given Mario quite a glow around his body – in an effort to simulate his appearance in Galaxy. The end result makes me wonder if he’s actually appearing to me in a dream….
Later this week I’ll give you guys a look at some of the process involved in how I make the comics. Thanks for reading, everyone. We really appreciate it.
Well Ray’s ‘window’ problem is a little different than my Windows problem, but I guarantee I’ve spent more time with more versions of Windows this week than he did drawing the comic. I’m ready to wave the white flag and put Vista (*shudder*) back on my laptop. I tried to downgrade, but my XP disc wouldn’t let me do that from a newer version of Windows, so I had to go back to Windows 98, then to XP, but I was having serious performance issues with the XP install, so I tried to go back to 98 in order to reinstall XP again, but now 98 tries to boot up and says there’s not enough memory to start Windows. And I can’t upgrade to XP from the broken state the computer is in, so my only option is to go back to Vista…or buy a Mac.
Anyway, I got the idea for this comic from the backlash Ray got at GoNintendo for his ‘scathing’ review of Mario Galaxy. I wanted Mario to personify all the fanboy sentiment and I think Ray pulled it off quite nicely. Hopefully even the GoNintendo folks can get a kick out of this one.
I really like the artwork in this strip, very nice work!
@Tim: Mac or Linux, you really can’t go wrong! (Although to be fair, I’m typing from an XP laptop…)
Great comic guys, I hope ya’ll stay strong, lovin the podcast too btw.
Is it just me or does mario have small arms/hands? Odd.
@Tim: You forgot to mention the calls “The Voice of Mario” made for Gamestop as another inspiration for the comic(at least I think it is).
You’re absolutely right, we did kind of mash 2 ideas together and I’m glad you caught on to that!
I’m loving this comic. I thought you guys might use the whole Gamestop phone-call thing in this week’s comic. Glad you didn’t play it out too much though, because it would have been alot with the podcast. Anyway, I think the extra effort was worth it on the graphics in the comic. Looks uhh…out of this world? Ok- forget I ever said that.
This should be a new mario power-up: Mafia Mario.
Ray, I actually really liked you review for Galaxy. You brought up some good points. For example, where the hell was Yoshi? I wanted to interact with him, not get an ‘unexpected visit’ from him (if you know what I mean.). Though I still LOVE Galaxy to death.
Just something I also noticed. You can still see Mario’s trail as he soars through the window from the second frame. It’s visible, though faint in the 5th, 6th, and 8th frames. Nice touch.
Good comic.
I’m just commenting because I hope there aren’t many comments this week and I want to get mentioned in the podcast.
Yeah, I’m a loser.
Great comic again, I need to play Super Mario Galaxy, it came in early yesterday but haven’t played it yet.
Did you buy a dell or acer or prebuilt sort of laptop? Some of their websites now offer a way to downgrade with a patch or something similar. Great work on the comic and the window. Photoshop is exactly the same with too many layers! Super stuff.
I love the Luma picture, I might even make it my avatar in gamesradar forums.
Tim:
To fix your computer, download a disc image of Ubuntu. It’s a version of Linux, and you can run it directly from CD. The Live CD is great for doing disk partitions and stuff even if you don’t want to install the operating system.
So, with the Live CD, you can format your disc, and from there you can use your old Windows XP cd to install without hassle.
come on give gnu/linux a chance use some free software… don’t go back to vista… :'( *pip* *pip*
get kubuntu i think you’ll like KDE the most 🙂
ps i am typing form gnu/linux! ubuntu!
Oliver,
Unfortunately it’s a Toshiba laptop with Vista built-in. With this particular model they won’t let you downgrade to XP. Also, they don’t even provide the correct XP drivers so it’s a real pain to even hunt those down (I’m talking sound drivers, NIC drivers, etc.).
Andrew/Dokura,
I’ve heard of Ubuntu and have heard great things about it. I may give that a shot, thanks guys!
@Tim/Ray: I like how ya’ll redesigned the site to go along with the theme of the comic, it’d be nice to see that every week, just saying.
🙁 You spell Internet with a capital “I” and not “i”!!! That’s all I care about! The game wasn’t perfect! It was very good! It could have been better! I have some suggestions to make it better!
That’s the plan!
@Tim/Ray: I also noticed the numbers behind each comment box….nice. The site redesign is phantasmagorical guys.
Phantasmagorical-pronounced: fan-taz-mah-gore-eh-cool.
Hey! This is some pretty nice work. I love the 2nd panel. Wish I knew how to make that my avatar. Of course, with permission?!?
HEY! How about a wallpaper of the second panel? 1280×1024 would be sweet.
EL CH33S3,
Your wish is Ray’s command. Go to our extras page and you’ll see the wallpaper in
a trio offour different resolutions. Also, go ahead and make an avatar out of anything you see here. I’d personally love to see someone with a crying Luma avatar.
*pip* *pip*
I really like the art style done in this comic, it’s quite awesome.
Man, I can’t wait to play that game. >_>
Tim, my advice, is if theres absolutly nothing you can do to get to XP, do NOT get Vista. A Mac would most likely work better. 100000% less BSODs.
However, this may make you envious, but im actually typing this from a computer using XP. And no, you cant steal my computer. Sorry, but no.
BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death
Oh Tristan, I know all about BSOD. But I did put Vista back on the laptop and doubled the RAM. It’s my best bet for now, but I’m thinking my next computer may indeed be a Mac. Thanks for the advice!
theere is a certain irony in ray’s views of galaxy for those that read the comic F@NBOY$.
Scott Dewitt, creator of fanboys, felt that Galaxy was everything it should be and that it surpassed 64. On the other hand, he felt that Twilight Princess, while good, could have been much better.
Ray thought Twilight Princess amazing, but Galaxy lacking.
Both come up with arguements supporting thier views that are reasonable, even in spite of the industry in general awarding both games near 10 scores.
just an interesting tidbit…
@Tim: Wish granted(avatar wise) 😛
Here’s the crying Luma avatar if anyone wants it, it’s a little grainy cause I made it in like 5 minutes in paint >_< . http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z11/dj75728/21534.jpg
Yoshi was too in the game as a hidden bonus level. I remember cause it was the first secret galaxy I discovered.
Yes, but I’m talking about Yoshi being in the game. Not a wooden planet shaped as a Yoshi head.
Hey Tim, i’m new here, i’ve follow the comic since i saw the link on DD, big fan… about the Vista/XP problem, i had the same issue with a Toshiba laptop, downgrade is off the table, but formatting the hard drive isn’t, all you have to do is to get a copy of a linux distro (Ubuntu Desktop sounds good because it’s a live CD) then format the Windows partition, and lastly, install Windows XP from scratch, now about the drivers, it’s more complicated but with the Laptop Model, the hardware models and a few google searches you can find all… i’ve done that with 3 different Toshiba Laptops with built-in Vista, and they’re running free right now.
Your comics are hilarious. I really enjoy your site. I have no idea where you learned to draw like that. I looked for a biography of you two on this site, but I couldn’t find one. It’d be nice to read one. Thanks and keep it up!
Sweet, thanks! Any way you could also make one with the Luma from the 2P logo? I love how the trail of tiny stars looks and to make an avatar like that would be difficult to do right?
your comics are genious thank stumble for findin ya’s 4 me …woot
I am a gonintendo fan. It sucks. Nah i’m just joking this is one of the best yet. the part where he brings out a luma is hilarious. I love these comics
I just read your review. Perfect. the no yoshi thing really really pissed me off. nintendo thinks they can replace yoshi with a tiny yoshi head planet. and the powerups weren’t that great either. the thing is i’m only partly fanboy so i can agree with most of your statements
why are people still talking about the computer thing? this comic is from LAST YEAR.
Yeah seriously. Where WAS Yoshi? How could Nintendo make such a large game, but not include Yoshi? Same with Super Paper Mario.
Wow… Loved the art in this one and the sad face… awww….
Lol
Ironically, yoshi was just announced in the new super mario galaxy 🙂
You Know, this is funnier in retrospect. It was funny to begin with, but now it’s *really* funny.
Oh, and RISE FROM MY GRAVE as you descend into yours.
