The Fundamental Theorem of War

TimAnother tough one to get out the door as I’m traveling today to see Ray in Oregon! We had to do a little planning ahead this week, which can be tough. I did have to brush up on my Calculus a bit to fit a math joke in here (bonus points for getting it!). I was a math major in college but I can’t say I remember much of it now. It’s kind of sad that after studying something for four years, it’s basically gone, but I guess if it doesn’t get applied, that’s what happens!

RayAh, good old math humor. I don’t get it.

Loved it, but I hace a feeling others might not enjoy the math humor…

Wow, went up early this week. Nice! GCG.

Personally, never got into the twin stick shooters. I can tolerate SSHD and that’s as far as I get… tolerating. Frankly, I think they NEED to bring back Super Smash TV complete with cheesy host. Then it might be the SECOND twin stick shooter I could tolerate.

Awesome comic. i even get all the math jokes in the comic.

P.S. Woohoo! i have now posted 1 comment!

    Sweet logo by the way.

just kidding. its actually an awesome comic. but i do hate calculus. oh so much

is this comic a Geometry Wars referance, by any chance?

  10. dj75728 says:

NCG! I love math ^_^ . And Ray, you’ve really outdone yourself with the logo this week.

  11. roadjcat says:

Honestly, I didn’t get the punchline, but the second panel made me laugh so it didn’t really matter.

I was never around when you guys talked about the inspiration for the TV, but you guys said it was inspired by a DC Talk album (or am I totally losing it?), and I never got a chance to say that that’s freaking awesome! I’m not a huge DC Talk fan (sister is), but I actually know who they are so yay.

Also, nice touch adding the wavebird controllers on the Wii.

  12. Darkness_Keeper says:

Great Comic, I love the oh so obvious Geometry Wars knock-off. 😛

And if I understood anything that comic was trying to tell me, I’d be impressed with myself.

    So, uh, pretty colors. 😛

  13. Well, I’ve been reading 2P START! for quite a while now, but I’ve never attempted a comment. Well, starting now, I’m going to change that, for two reasons.

    1) I went back and listened to the whole archive of podcasts. At first, I thought it would be like “Blah Blah, then I clicked here.” I never should have doubted you. Your podcast was quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. My favorite was the “Sonic and the black doom edition.” I had to pause several times just to breathe between bouts of laughing! Never have I seen two people’s personalities work together so well.

    2) This comic is simply wonderful. It really captures the flavor of Geometry Wars, and the visuals are spot-on, right down to the warped grid.

Seriously, you guys deserve this cake. GLaDOS is baked it!

Wow, all of them? When I first came on I just went back to maybe Podcast 20 or something because I figured that any topic mentioned would be a bit outdated…maybe I should watch them…apparently I’m not as…hmmm…what term do I want to use….loyal? Obsessive? Dunno, either way I didn’t listen to all the podcasts. Maybe I will some day…

You’re too kind! Thanks for rising from your grave and commenting, it means everything. One of these days I think I’m going to tell Tim to give up on writing scripts and we’ll just starting being podcast-exclusive……

I was never around when you guys talked about the inspiration for the TV, but you guys said it was inspired by a DC Talk album (or am I totally losing it?)

No, you’re right. It’s based off of the television on the cover of their “Supernatural” album. That album still holds up really well too….

Wait, I was under the impression that you just kinda stumbled across it and thought it was a good idea…so you actually own the CD? That’s even awesomer! I sound really stupid right now, but I don’t care. Usually people talk about music and I have NO idea what they’re talking about. I actually do for once.

And don’t you think just a podcast is going to create some problems? Such as not having comic talk…or are you just going to fill it’s spot with the chicken grab? If you do…next time make it Cucco grab, this IS a gaming webcomic after all!

Wanna know something really sad? I just figured out why you made Calculus wars…I just thought it was funny so you went with it, now I actually get it…wow. Although I have a feeling more people would’ve gotten Algebra wars, but whatever. XD

  23. The first panel made me want to go in shock, on account that math gives me nightmares.
I suffered through and scrolled down through the genius of it all.

    Great comic guys.

  24. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Whoa! When did this comic show up? Anyway, nice comic guys. Unfortunately, I didn’t really get the math joke. Probably because I haven’t even taken Calculus yet.

EDIT: I just noticed what all of the stuff in the first panel was! I wouldn’t have even thought of it, until I read Black’s comment.

  25. son_of_shao_khan says:

NCG, even though i don’t get the math joke i’m sure it’s hilarious. and just so you know i like 2p start because it’s funny and i feel like i know you both a little better than i know other webcomic people.

    Keep up the great work.

oh and i think i figured out what that “defeat bowser instantly” device is in super mario bros. it’s an axe that mario uses to cut the bridge that bowser is standing on.

Tim and Ray brought it up a loooooooong time ago, during one of their comics.

    Yeah! That’s it.

  32. FluffyPanda says:

For a moment there I thought I was reading XKCD… but with much better art. (Note: this is the highest praise that can be offered to any web comic)

Incidentally, I think that while a firm grasp of calculus is not integral to the understanding of this strip, it does tend to help. Otherwise you might end up thinking it’s just a little derivative.

    *Tumbleweed*

I’ll get my coat (it’s the long white one with the scientific calculator in the pocket).

  33. FluffyPanda says:

Oh, and Tim, if you were a math major, what does this simplify down to?

    (N^2/N)*(C^2/C)*(G^2/G)

Yes it’s trivial but it’s almost midnight here in Paris and I’m tired 😉

  34. Snifit says:

Great comic, it brings me back to the old High School calc days.

Though I’m kinda surprised not to see an imaginary number or maybe an e^x

EDIT- Oh yeah, first comment. I lurk no more.

An imaginary number? Now I haven’t taken calculus, but I know what that is. How would they represent that in the comic without making it look totally out of place?

Ah okay, I was not aware there was a symbol for it. I thought they were going to have to put the square root of -5 or something…

  39. Brawler08 says:

Yeah, i is the square root of -1

  40. Snifit says:

And thus the square root of -5 would be 5i.

Weird, I was just reviewing the wikipedia page, and of course there were links to the winning comics in the Joystiq wrap up, so I just saw those comics…

  45. CKcheeseboy says:

I feel the need to correct that it would actually be sqrt(5)*i, because you still take the square root of 5. For an easier example, the square root of -4 is 2i.

    …Yes I am a nerd.

For a moment there I thought I was reading XKCD… but with much better art.

    Agreed.

  46. Jaju says:

Tim/Ray, you two should start going to conventions. Like Anime Expo or something.

  48. roadjcat says:

lol. on TKA (i site i go to) theres this guy, anders12345, who keeps double, triple, and quadruple posting, and no matter how many times we tell him to stop, he doesnt get the message. plus his grammer and spelling sucks so bad we cant even tell what hes saying half the time. but english isnt his first language… i think he said hes from norway?

and if anyone asks if this has any relevance to the conversation whatsoever….. well…. it kinda does….

Also, did anyone try and translate my mega-encoded-binary message?
If you translate that, youd get a string of ‘one’s and ‘zero’s. which youd have to replace with ‘1’s and ‘0’s appropriatly. then translate it AGAIN! lol, im evil like that.
    MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I did (because i have no life like that).

It took a few minutes to translate over and gave me a headache; a quarter of the way in the Z’s didn’t even look like letters, they looked like random scribbles, three-quarters in, so did the O’s.

      The message I revealed?

Yes, We have a FORUM for all of your half minded blabber…

Tim, you need to find out how to ban people who start this crap again….

here, I have created a thread for this utter pile of fecal matter

    http://www.2pstart.com/forum/general-discussion/coded-talkings/page-1/post-4277/#p4277

NOW STOP IT! IT WAS FUNNY TO BEGIN WITH BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS….

(i think we need moderators for the comments)

  100. Gadoink says:

Anon, i guess we gotta continue the binary argument on the forum now, huh?

EDIT: and D3vin, i say that calling our talking in code a ‘pile of fecal matter’ is a bit harsh.

Well well well, I could have said the other word for it but that would bump this site’s Pg rating to a Pg13 rating… I just want this to stop and I am sick of translating every set of “10101010101010”‘s I find to read something like ‘zero one zero one zero one’ that I have to translate again to find out what it is…. It is like putting a word find inside of a Magic Eye puzzle, It isn’t worth it… It started as a joke and it was taken to far. Please stop…

  103. Rokai says:

    Holy S*** F*** A**!
Is there a Chaos emerald here?

  104. Gadoink says:

Rokai, you just reminded me of a comic from (the dreaded) Wiik Band comments!

Army of Super Sonics? But we’d need like……*calculates*……..465.3 Chaos Emeralds. I’ve got like….half a one…….how many you got?

this quote is strange and funny. a good combo, dont you think?

Also, on a side note, ive now downloaded all the 2pstart podcasts, and i swear, when i downloaded them, my ipod had full battery, and it was like 6 or 7 pm. i only took a half hour or so break for dinner. when i finally stopped… it was for two reasons. A) my ipod was nearly out of battery, and B) it was 2 am. no, seroiusly, it was 2 am. im not exaturating (i cant spell that…. ah whatever).

but yeah, the podcast is awesome! escpecially the one that was made after ‘untold origins’. i think that anyone whos heard the suggestion box part of that knows why…. lol… was it really 12 of 34 comments?
    omg. 1234. WOAH

    …..and im talking too much.

  105. Gadoink says:

i know this is a double-post, but there something i just feel like i need to point out.

Awesome comic. i even get all the math jokes in the comic.
P.S. Woohoo! i have now posted 1 comment!

no moonjuice… thats your second comment, you also commented on ‘import only’. you also said that it was your first comment then as well. do you like have a bad memory or something…? thinking that you posted a comment for the first time…. twice?

sorry… i just felt like pointing that out for some reason.

That should’ve been the name for this comic.

And I agree with D3vin, the binary is just annoying. Even to me, and that’s bad.

Too obvious. And technically they do…every week when they say that he’s the worst character Sonic Team has ever created.

meh. i suppose you have a point there. plus, i have my own black doom to hand out… to pictochat. (black doom award music starts playing)
whenever you try and leave pictochat, you are FORCED to turn of the DS. this happens with settings too, but at least there it makes sense (like when you do a system update on a computer, you have to restart). but why pictochat? there is NO REASON at ALL for it to do that. WHY?!?!?

  112. LoganXZ says:

this happens with settings too, but at least there it makes sense (like when you do a system update on a computer, you have to restart).

Yeah, but you don’t have to restart your computer when you change the screen’s display. Having the system turn off like that is an annoyance, and I think had they thought through enough, they could have left out that need to shut down all together.

  113. Gadoink says:

and it still doesnt explain pictochat doing it! and ds download play, too. go to ds download play, press back, oh look you gotta restart. UGH
    design FAIL.

also, what color does your screen turn when you eject your game card in pictochat (this only works in pictochat)? mine turns purple, apparently its ds-specific. my freind john apparently classifies a ds by what color it turns when you crash it in pictochat.

  114. dj75728 says:

    ^^I must try that now.

  115. Tacos says:

    Mine turns purple as well.

You’d have to ask Tim, since this was all his idea. Doubt he got it from anywhere else, though.

  118. LOL, Calculus.. I went through a couple years of that… then hit linear algebra and was like, “screw this” and started developing on teh webs…

Hey, guess I’ll rise from my grave here. To be honest, I just learned about you guys today, and have been reading backwards from the Bubble comic. I could tell you guys were hilarious, but as soon as I saw this I HAD to comment. Tying my two favorite things together: Math and videogames. You guys are FREAKING amazing. Keep up the good work!

  125. says:

Now that I have risen from my grave I have to say this is an amazing comic. I made a list of really bad jokes all starting with “An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar” many of them being calculus jokes. You made my day today randomly with an old comic as I am going though the comics as I listen to the pod casts (finally)
