Echochrome Auditions

TimI’m not sure how I thought of this comic, but I’ve always loved optical illusions, so I was happy to see some favorite video game characters deal with truly impossible situations. The ‘Echochrome’ theme came later after Ray suggested black and white would be better visually than color. It took on the Echochrome look and voilà! an afterthought becomes the central theme!

RayFirst time the logo was bigger in file size than the comic. Hope you guys enjoyed it, and sorry for a small bit of copy and pasta.

    Awesome!

After reading endless pages of uni work, something so visually-pleasing and simple makes me miss the days when my brain was not so fried.

Neat. An interesting concept and very pale. 😀 Be serious Ray: how long did this thing take you?

I think you’ll find the answer in his comment.

  10. Ewan says:

Awesome comic. I woulnd’t have noticed any copy past unless you had said.

What I want to know is, was it an choice to put sonic on a Möbius strip since if I recall correctly his home planet is called Mobius. Or is it just one of those happy coincidences?

  11. Rokai says:

    Oh wow Mario likes copypasta.

And this is the second funny comic this month keep it up!

  12. D3vin says:

You forgot that one Mc Escher picture with all the stairs and doorways, Could have been a great Zelda picture…

    Gr8 c G! (great comic Guys!)

The Pasta in question only made it easier for you, I can’t draw those kind of things If my life depended on it.

  13. lwelyk says:

    Brilliant. Just brilliant.

  14. geozeldadude says:

awesome! these would look great on a t-shirt — maybe in color?

  15. Tacos says:

So simple, yet so mind-blowingly amazing. Congrats

  16. It…made….me….dizzy……

GCG! I give you much props for the idea Tim, and for being able to draw that Ray. It would have hurt my mind way too much.

  17. D3vin says:

These kind of illusions work best without the color.

  18. SolidSnakeSimulation95 says:

Awesome Comic, at first I couldn’t see who was on the mobius strip but then I’m like “Oh! Sonic”. And who cares about copy pasta, the comic looks good and is funny and thats all that matters.

  19. Dominator_101 says:

    Awesome comic!
Man, I love optical Illusions. I especially love the Q-bert one.

  20. Narnian says:

Simple and original. Just the way I like it. 😉

  21. hayley says:

Ironically we had this lesson on optical illusions in art history class last week, those exact ones, minus the sonic ring, but we got a very nice piece on a building with pillars inside , outside. excellent interpretation though lol.

  22. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Great comic guys! This one was really well thought out.

And a little copy pasta every once in a while is perfectly acceptable. 🙂

  24. Kyle says:

Nicely done, the mario one made me dizzy, excellent job!!!!

  25. Gadoink says:

COPY AND PASTA WITH THE MARIO!

  26. Beef says:

Your comic is consistently great, it’s going to be one of the really big ones.

  27. mike says:

lol, Sonic’s is incredibly meta, since he’s on a MOBIUS strip

  28. Unclever title says:

    Heh, I get it, Mobius.

Except that one can actually be physically made. Though in reality it would show signs of being twisted.

And I guess for Mario THAT’S what you call a warp pipe.

Q-bert just confuses me ordinarily, so I’ll leave it at that.

  29. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Heh, hopefully if they do become famous, they won’t forget about their long time fans and readers.

You forgot that one Mc Escher picture with all the stairs and doorways, Could have been a great Zelda picture…

Maybe that could be a sequel comic. Escher had tons of stuff they could use.

I LOVED this comic! The only thing is that it’s a little bit hard to see, but that could just be my monitor.

PS For some reason, it thinks I’ve already rated this and the last few comics, when I don’t recall doing so. I don’t know if this is a WordPress problem, but I thought I would let you know.

  31. Gadoink says:

qbert swears too much, ya know?

  32. Matt says:

I love it and it makes me wish i had the means to play echochrome 🙁 *tear* oh well I don’t regret my gaming decisions nicely done and keep up the good work you guys make my wednesdays

  33. Nicolas says:

Those are great and need a sequel. Their existence on this site might even generate traffic by itself.

  34. hydrocow says:

lol this comic combines my two favorite things :P. but i thing it would make Escher roll in his grave to know of that the world of optical illusions has come to this.

quick question: if sonic started to run on the mobius strip, would the friction on it slowly warp it into a ring by melting the edges?

  35. hey says:

    Best strip yet, inspired!

  36. DrOswald says:

Fantastic comic. I think your best comics are the ones based on concept humor like this. My favorites are #44, #78, #80, and #85.

By the way, Q-Bert part on a t-shirt.

  37. CKcheeseboy says:

What’s funny is I didn’t even realize this was based on a game until I saw an article about an update pack for it on Joystiq. At least it’s simple enough that you can enjoy it without knowing about that.

  38. Gadoink says:

and qbert part on a wallpaper.

  39. shadowkid92 says:

i loved this one especially the last frame

  40. roadjcat says:

This is kinda unrelated, but I want to say it. After I gave my rant on how awesome I thought Animal Crossing would be, Ray, you said

City Folk’s only serious addition is Wii Speak, and I can’t say I’m looking at the DOJO everyday for that one…..

However, the Japanese site is actually posting new videos everyday to show off the features in the game, so in a sense, it is very much like the dojo. Just thought that I’d share that. XD

the only way I’d get that game is if they added more of a plot, for example, you have moved to the town to get a job to get money to pay for your mom’s kidney surgery or something. I personally think Animal Crossing is the closest thing to Seinfeld the game, It’s a game about nothing!!

  42. Ray says:

I just watched a video showing off one of the City’s new features: the theatre, I believe. The player sat down, a curtain was raised, and a lone character on the stage stood in one place and only talked.

So again, I’ll repeat. I can’t say I’m looking at the DOJO everyday for this game. They could have updates everyday, sure. Nothing’s stopping them. It’s just that I have nearly zero interest bringing me back.

  43. Gewurztraminer says:

I have nearly zero interest bringing me back.

On one hand (1) Nintendo completely missed the mark by changing very little about the Wii version of Animal Crossing. I know it’s been said, but, same items? come on. I can only perfect my Modern/Exotic/mad-scientist-basement so many times before it gets old. I’ve already played the ‘cube and DS versions so I already know politically correct ‘holidays’ are in, and access to NES games is out. I mean, even an interface to a player’s VC library would be enough to convince me. What’s more fun than playing a game in which your character is playing a game?

On the other hand (2) Nintendo is completely on target by bringing Animal Crossing to potential new audiences by releasing a Wii version. For someone that has only played the GameCube version or only played the DS version, (or neither) there would be good reason to try City Folk as a first or second AC game and I’d recommend it to anyone that’s interested.

    FINAL JUDGMENT:
Slap a “Play on Wii” sticker on the box and be done with it. Just don’t cover up Poncho with that sticker… Poncho rocks!

  44. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Oh… The more I hear about these new “features” in ACCF, the less interested I get. Hopefully, something will be revealed that will make me want to buy it. And I think it’s funny that it has it’s own “Dojo”. But anyway, if there’s going to be an arguement about it, the forum would be a good place to do so.

  45. roadjcat says:

I just watched a video showing off one of the City’s new features: the theatre, I believe. The player sat down, a curtain was raised, and a lone character on the stage stood in one place and only talked.

That character just happens to be the best character in the game! But whatever, I’m going to stop pushing City Folk on everyone. I’m going to buy it, I’m going to love it, and I’m going to talk about it, you can then choose to ignore me. XD I know the features probably aren’t as great as they could be, but the dialogue will get an update and that’s the major change that’ll keep me coming back.

  46. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Hey, uh, Tim? Are you by any chance doing something to the Forums? Because in the Invasion Episode 2 Details thread, the last page only has this on it:

  49. Gadoink says:

D’oh. I forgot to listen to the podcast yesterday. Tim, Ray, will you please forgive me? I promise that I’ll watch it today… (puppy dog eyes)

  50. Tim says:

Hey Guys you won Joystiq’s weekly voting as best web comic. I quote: “It’s a rare-yet-joyous day when the gaming comic we really want to see win actually does earn the popular vote. Joystiq readers, thank you for picking 2P Start’s Echochrome Auditions.” Great Job. Dad

  51. MetaRidleyR27 says:

Congratulations, guys! You definitely deserved it! Just another small step on your path to fame and fortune! Well, maybe not the fortune part, but you get what I mean.

  52. Tacos says:

Just saw the outcome. Definitely the comic with the most original idea. And I must say, that’s where 2pstart continues to excel in my opinion.

  53. John says:

    wonderful

  54. honus says:

I love the comic. I hate to disappoint everybody but that isn’t a Mobius strip.

  55. Tim says:

I love the comic. I hate to disappoint everybody but that isn’t a Mobius strip.

    Glad someone finally noticed!

  56. BRAVO.
Come to think of it, I bet Mr. Escher would’ve loved videogames. Especially some of the Super Mario 64 castle rooms in the tower.

  57. chriskatching says:

Hahaha Laughed at this one too 😛

  58. Ridly says:

Sonic on a MOBIUS strip? Anyone who know Sonic Anime knows that it takes place on Mobius. Nice joke.

  59. Ridly says:

Sonic on a MOBIUS strip? Anyone who knows the slightest thing about Sonic Anime (like me) knows that it takes place on Mobius. Nice joke.

  60. Ridly says:

    SORRY for the double post.

  61. Mirby says:

The optical illusion lover in me loves this gag… You know what, read my comment in the Powers of Ten comic, you’ll see where this is going.

  62. Frozen says:

Quite the visual appeal you have here in this comic. Always so very varied in your visual styles Ray. I’m proud of you sonny.
