From Dawn Till Dusk
As Ray has discovered, there’s a big difference between the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed and the 360/PS3 version of Sonic Unleashed. I’ll let him go into more detail, but what’s most surprising to me is that thus far, the MetaCritic reviews of the Wii version are actually higher than the 360 version (72 to 66). Ray hates the Wii version and loves the 360 version, so who’s crazy, Ray or the reviewers?
Sonic Unleashed for the Wii was a pretty sad experience, including the ratio between Sonic and Werehog stages. Each marginally-enjoyable day stage (lasting about three minutes tops) with the real Sonic would be followed with at least three, if not four, and once even five stages (lasting 6-10min each) with Werehog. When all was said and done, I had played 8 unique Sonic stages and 28 unique Werehog stages, last time I counted.
This had me worried that the problems I was experiencing were ones carried down from the original Xbox360 version. Tim was willing to bet there were very few differences, but thankfully he was wrong. I’m having a blast with the game, and the levels are a much more enjoyable 1:1 ratio, as expected. I want to say “Sonic’s back!” but I’ll need to really dig in deep before I decide in my review.
I wish I had a little more time to work on this strip since I didn’t get into as much detail in the art as I wanted to. Next time, I suppose?
I was expecting Werehog Sonic to crush Chip in his anger. But nice comic otherwise.
Another comic that involves continuous scrolling. Always a good thing. Unfortunately I can’t nitpick about anything this time, all I can say is NCG. 😀
At the last moment, Tim mentioned that as an idea. Something to the effect of…
Sonic: “Finally, the sun is out and I’ve got a need… a need for speed!”
Chip: “Guess what, Sonic?”
Werehog: “SHUT IT, DOG FAIRY!!”
We both commented that it would just feel like a total repeat from the previous Unleashed comic, but it would have been funny for coming back to that theme.
Yeah, it would’ve been funny. I mean you kinda made past references anyway because if I hadn’t listened to the podcast I would’ve been totally clueless and this comic, no offense, wouldn’t have been funny.
And you can use the phrase “SHUT IT, DOG FAERIE!” anytime you want, because that was seriously funny. And yes, I used the English spelling of fairy again. I just prefer it that way, it looks cooler.
EDIT: Oh and I forgot to ask, do Sonic’s shoes actually change like that as it turns to night? That’s weird.
Lol, thank God the 360 version is better, now I need not kill myself…
Good comic! I can guess what the next comic will be about…
Ray, I was just wondering if the style for the first panel is an hommage or parody of something else, as you could’ve easily just left the background black instead of including the silhouettes.
Oh, and NCG!
The crushing of chip would’ve been a good callback but it works fine without it.
No, I just thought it would carry a neat look to it. The words were really the last thing I added to the comic, so I just dumped them in a spot that looked nice with what the first frame was already doing.
Sonic really needs more adventures in Daylight Savings Time if this keeps up.
Haha! Nice comic guys! This one is really good!
Sonic Unleased (panel 1)? What, he finally decided to buy instead of rent? *rimshot*
Yakko, good catch.
Ray, FIX IT!
Wait fix what? I’m not spotting the problem here…*feels really oblivious*
And HEY! He gets “Good Catch”, I get “Well I think it was mostly roadjcat right? I mean… nitpicking all the incorrect details…” I mean Ray was never told to fix all the things I spotted with the last comic.
Geez, shows what kinda respect I get around here. XD
Oh wait. I assume there was a typo? That was fixed? Quite quickly I might add. XD
And yeah, I just thought of something. I thought Ray wasn’t supposed to buy Sonic games unless they had at least a 7.5 rating?
Yup, No respect,
I say we join forces and …
… take over 2P START!
it’s the mutiny all over again!
Ahhhh, the good ol days of yore.
I was a nobody, and now I’m the unoffical 3rd party.
Meh, I would have cracked too. BTW guys, can you make a comic about the 360 one? Also, how about Tim gives it a shot? He was the first to play the Wii version.
Nah it’s not that bad. Don’t forget, there’s 3 8 minute werehog levels compared to the 360 version’s 1 30 minute level… Gah, i’m tired of saying this… But it’s fun having both versions. And for the record I love the Wii day levels and the 360 night levels.
hah… i want to get this 1! the last sonic 1 here was the secret rings.didn’t really catch my eye… but this 1 looks good! any1 have an idea when it’s coming out in South Africa?
NCG! Good stuff!
P.S. What happened to my “No. 5” avatar?? (from Short Circuit)
Oh well.
EDIT: WHAT!? It’s back! Hmm… cool.
Yes, in fact that should be the ONLY THEME from now on! You should end every comic with a shot of Chip being torn apart by a Werehog. I don’t care if it doesn’t fit… just do it anyway.
For example, some future comic:
(Panel 3) Old Snake: So I said “Sonny, you can keep your soup”
(Panel 4) Werehog: WROOOARGH! *shot partially obscured by Chip’s intestines flailing around*
Wii reviewers don’t hold games to the same standard maybe? A 360 game can lose 20 points for not looking like a window into an alien world and 20 more for not having groundbreaking multiplayer.
On the Wii they just give it 10 points for each time the reviewer got RSI.
Joking… Joking… but I feel relatively safe from flames because the most hardcore Wii fanboys will have deleted their 2pstart bookmarks in disgust as soon as Ray got a 360 😉
All I have to say is Dark Gaia on all versions was Epic… Fail that is.
I have the Wii version and laugh at this because it’s so true. I can’t wait to play Empire City in the Wii version.
@Tim’s blurb: As far as who’s crazy, it could have something to do with what they are each looking for. Ray was looking for a great Sonic game, whereas the reviewers were probably looking for a good game in general, so they may not have hated the night parts as much. Sort of like how a hardcore fan of Mario platforming might not like the Paper Mario series because it’s not really platforming (besides Super Paper Mario), but somebody who is looking for a regular game might like it because of what it is and not care that it’s Mario but not platforming.
Also, for Musical Misfits, I’m surprised nobody has suggested this yet:

And I would like to suggest the Star song from Yoshi on the NES:

Finally, is there a font somewhere that you use for the 2P START! logo, or does Ray just draw up all the text? There’s something I’d like to use it for if I could…
I just discovered your comic today 🙂 and i loved it!!!!
i sat all the morning on my office watching your archive from the beginning to this last one comic!!
keep the great job!!!
Salutes from Mexico!
Tim has yet to play Sonic Unleashed on any console. It’s all been me, me, me!
I tryed it at a friend house, i really like it.
P.S. Add Me Rey.
I have a question about the game for you 360 and PS3 people. Is there a stage in your version (daytime) of America where you run across skyscrapers or a China stage with you running on the Great Wall? I had heard about those stages, but they never appeared on wii. And originally i thought unleashed was awesome!…but then i recently looked at the other systems……..crap. Anyway, another great issue!
People seem to get you two confused quite often, don’t they?
Back from vacation. NCG. I can happily say I will not purchase this game. Sonic still isn’t back in my eyes until a multitude of people (or angels, that’d be cool too) tell me he is.
Yay For sonic 🙂
I think Sega’s still sore about Nintendo winning the console war of yore.
Is it just me, or did Ray spend way more time on the last panel than the first few? Cause in the last panel, Sonic in his Werehog form seems a lot more vicious. But in the first panels, he almost looks like a childish plush toy. If you just gave him bigger, shinier eyes, he could be on the cover of the Littlest Pet Shop video game!
Look, kids! It’s Littlest Pet Shop: Werehog Edition! : )
yeah, im gonna have to agree with you on that one.
lol, Ray should draw that werehog from the first few panels with big shiney eyes, just because of how funny it would look. lol
hey dumbuk… your leading me to google you spammer!
I’m not sure how that url takes you to google, but it does. Why?
A) Because it just does.
B) GOOGLE DOMINATES THE INTERNET!
Long time reader first time poster. I really like your comic. But I was commenting because: It made me think of the Power Rangers movie posters. :/ just me? I was a 90’s kid.
Does it really sucks in the Wii? I don’t care much about graphics or frame rate, but can u tell me if the gameplay really sucks or is it only the graphics and frame rate?
The Sonic levels are fun, but not as fantastic. The Werehog levels are much more numerous and suffer from poor controls and bland level design. The overworlds (temples) are boring and clearly filler. The Wii version is simply a bad port of the 360 game with completely different levels and way too much Werehog. I’m hoping to have a review up about the two of them by next weekend.
Thanks, I like sonic games… well most of them, so I was wondering for what system should I play it before been totaly disappointed and not give a chance to the other 2.
Oh. Is it officially called the werehog? Were, meaning man? In the full moon, he changes into a hog, and back to a man? Really? Do some research, Sega.
SERIOUSLY?!?! hahah 😛
Same EXACT thing on PS2. One really good day stage per continent and at least three passable night stages.
I was really disappointed with the Wii version. It was extremely easy, and I seriously completed the game in the rental week. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 version is much more fun and difficult at the same time, allowing you to adventure around and complete side quests and buy stuff, and being incredibly hard due to you needing a certain amount of medals to get into areas. Great comic guys, and I half expected Sonic to pwn Chip!
