2P START! Live!: Arctic Blast! Edition
December 22nd, 2008
Ray’s snowed in, Tim makes his return to the podcast (thankfully), and even Eddie shows up in this very special episode. We discuss our Games of Christmas Past, Consoles of Christmas Present, and Games of Christmas Yet-to-Come! Plus: Ray’s very own version of a Christmas song!
Happy Holidays, everyone!

I’m not a huge Aerosmith fan but I did pick up the game and the presentation of it was the best part. The interviews and all of the special features related to the band history was more interesting than playing the actual songs. So, in that respect, band-specific games can have their place above DLC-albums alone. As for GH:Aerosmith though…. traded that in for World Tour.
What about Bark the Polar-Bear?
Okay, first off I want to say that I really enjoyed this podcast, in fact I think it was probably my favorite so far.
And now on to my notes, which are the longest they’ve ever been, so you’ve been warned. And remember, some of them are totally and completely random.
1. When Tim pretended not to be there…”Get out!”? Kind of a weird thing to say, Ray…more ironic I suppose. I have no idea what the relevance of this point is, so on to the next one.
2. Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones…it just bugs me…
3. Well, I shall soon have access to COD4, but I have no plans of getting Bioshock. I stick to Metroid, thanks. đ
4. I recommend Paper Mario to everyone! Seriously, if you have played it…then…that’s just sad.
5. I have to agree. I went back and played the original Smash Bros., and it was really hard! It felt kinda clunky…
6. Y’know what I’d change about the Wii? I’d prevent it from breaking after two years RIGHT AROUND CHRISTMAS! Sorry…that just bugs me.
7. I have the Wii Shop Channel updates e-mailed to me, so couldn’t you technically have them sent to the Wii Message Board?
8. I think we can all agree that Wi-Fi is an add-on and the Wii will never get an online system like that.
9. If you would like to buy a shovel you must pay 500 bells. đ
10. Okay, the audio actually kinda bugged me in this one. Maybe it’s just me, but it seemed to be kinda quiet…especially Tim.
11. I’d like to see either an new Paper Mario, Ace Attorney (though I’m 90% sure that’s coming along with Gyakuten Kenji), Metroid, or a Wii Music with Brawl’s soundtrack.
12. Okay, time for a mini rant…again. Wii Sports Resort is a follow-up to Wii sports. Writing it off after seeing only 30% of the game seems extremely ridiculous to me, especially when 20% looks good. Sure, disc dog looks bland, but who cares? There are SEVEN other games! SEVEN! Two are already looking good. Do you honestly think that they’re going to screw up another 4? Because as long as they get two more right, it’ll have everything Wii Sports did, plus 5 forgettable games. And Wii Motion Plus. Nintendo is going to have to do A LOT before Resort is worse than the original.
13. Guitar Hero is seriously turning into the next Mario Party. I just heard about Metallica earlier today and I couldn’t believe it. And then you guys just mentioned Beatles! In fact, I think there are more GH games (or there will be soon) than there are Mario Party games. This is just stupid.
14. Why do I not believe you when you say the comic is going to be short on Wednesday? XD
15. HEY! What do you know, someone who I’ve actually heard of got comment of the week!
16. Yeah, even I’ll admit that achievements such as those would be pretty spiffy!
17. Wow…I don’t think I’ve ever heard you guys spend so much time on one comment before (well technically two, but whatever)…
18. 5 points for being mentioned that often? XD That’s pretty hard if you ask me…
19. And what do you get for being mentioned outside of the suggestion box…such as being labeled and “nitpicker” XD
20. King Boom Boo was pretty spiffy if you ask me. XD
21. I actually had to pause the podcast to write down the above comment because I was laughing at Eddie’s “We’re white.” comment. I practically burst into laughter (which I might add happened quite often this time around) mid-sentence…or mid-note…whichever you prefer.
22. For some reason I feel the need to mention Phendrana Drifts in this winter episode. At while I’m in the middle of mentioning random things, here is where I get to do this: “Rouge”. There! I’m back on track!
23. Ray your Black Doom Award led to a *faceplam*. That really is rather stupid.
24. Tim’s BDA led to a “XD”. That is all. đ
25. I was thinking the same thing as Eddie. Wouldn’t we all love to quench are thirst with chips?
26. Wait…Netflix is eligible for a BDA…it’s not really gaming related, is it?
27. Is that Pokemon music I hear in the background? đ
28. Hey! Enchanted is a good movie.
29. Seems like Netflix had one of my “Who thought that was a good idea!?” moments.
30. What!? No Musical Misfit again!
31. The White Christmas song was spiffy, but it lead to an expression somewhere between đ and 0_o
Okay, well that’ll do it for this time. Have fun scrolling past this.
D’oh! You’re right…
Why have I never heard of these things before? How long are these creatures in the game? Like two seconds?
EDIT: And is/was my post above awating moderation because it’s so long?
I claim Sonic King Crown now plox
I think Tim should get a Black Doom Award. Remember a couple weeks ago in the podcast (I believe it was his Black Doom Award), Tim said something along the lines of the Metal Gear preview being “blatantly obvious for 360”? Well, it was SO obvious, that it’s actually for the iPhone:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/rumor-a-next-metal-gear-is-for-iphone/
I never did see why everyone was predicting 360…
I don’t know why it won’t let me edit my last post (I literally just hit submit), but I think Ray already used the polar bear way back in some really old podcast.
probably, but he still forgot it…
I do deserve a BDA for getting the Metal Gear game wrong, but Konami gets a BDA for making a crappy Metal Gear iPhone game that’s just ‘touch shooting’ instead of stealth gameplay!
I think the touch shooting is a cool idea.
Kinda like your a vengeful god, poking people dead from a phone.
Death-phone/pod.
I need my computer! I want to listen to this so bad. Stupid motherboard.
Hey, speaking of all the good extras on the site Ray, why not put up that White Christmas song for download? Would you really want this weather to continue until Christmas though?
Alright! Back to the usual podcasts! And it sucks when the power goes out. Well, you still have portable games. And I’ve only seen the first and fourth Indiana Jones movies. đ
I loved the whole thing about the Game of Christmas Past. “I’m going to give you guys a game…” “Well thanks Ray!” “By highly recommending it.” đ Also, COD4 and Bioshock are amazing, and I highly recommend them as well. If you want to try Bioshock out, Ray, there’s a demo on the Xbox Marketplace for free! I have good memories about the original Super Smash Bros, even though I never owned a N64.
I agree entirely about the 360 Dashboard for people without online. My online went out for a little while, and it just seemed so pointless. I also agree about the Wii messages and friend status. And, I think Nintendo is actually working on a WiiHD. Not sure how reliable the source is, but here’s the link. http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2008/09/30/new-wii-due-by-2011/?gclid=CI_wj6ONq5cCFQdCgwod7g4qiw
And I second the motion for Rez 2! After beating Rez HD, I’m hungry for more. And Dash of Destruction was a funny story for me. I saw Tim playing it one day, and I thought, “What the heck is that game?” Then I saw Ray playing it, and I thought, “Ok, so this game is either really good, or free.” So, it was worth like an hour (or maybe less) of enjoyment. đ
For some reason, Tim’s “What?!” about the comic length just made me burst out laughing. And short comics are ok every once in a while.
Thanks for the Suggestion Box! I might make some more achievements to get it up to 1000G, like an actual 360 game.
I entirely forgot about Bark the Polar Bear! Wasn’t he only in Sonic the Fighters? You also could have used that whale from Sonic Rush Adventure, I guess. đ Wow, Netflix sounds pretty horrible. I’m glad I don’t use it. Oh, and the background music for the Black Doom Awards was really cool! I feel like I’ve heard it somewhere before.
White Christmas was really cool! You should make a Christmas album, Ray! đ
And finally, Great Podcast Guys! Eddie (or Eddy, not really sure) should be on the show more often! The three of you do really good together! I’m not sure if I said this or not, but have you guys ever considered posting the podcasts on Youtube? It’d be a good way to get more viewers. Just a thought, of course. đ Anyway, sorry for the long comment, and keep up the good work!
Here’s the link to the Christmas song for those who wish to keep it.
Actually, there are still more Mario Party games than Guitar Hero games. For that matter, there are still more Metroid games than Guitar Hero games. Just sayin’.
Ooh, ouch. I didn’t know that.
Oh, and my comment is currently “Awaiting moderation”. Could someone please make it viewable?
Really? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_hero
Go to the “games” section.
Not only that, but it’s only been going on for three, four years, while the Metroid series has been going on for about 12.
There are some corrections I need to make here.
First, there are nine other games. Seven new ones. Also, I said that they need to get two more right, when they actually need to get three more right. Sorry, just wanted to fix that to avoid sounding like a total idiot.
Wow, broadband sucks in the US of A.
I’m on a fairly middle-of-the-road cable broadband service here in England and I’ve got 10 meg down / 512 k up.
The basic package is a 2 meg down / 256k up.
I assume that you’re basically getting screwed because there’s essentially a monopoly on who can provide broadband to any given urban area in the US?
1) I wasn’t counting cell phone games as actual “games” but, so be it. And obviously if you count Rock Band as well there’s another 5 for the main contenders in the genre. All I can say is that I have a ton of fun with the games and when it’s a song I actually know and would listen to outside of the game, it’s that much more fun to play it in game. So for me, the more that gets churned out only increases the likelihood of something I actually want being released. That’s how I see it.
2) Metroid’s been around for 22 years. Which means for 95% of its existence, I was uninterested. Clearly, I was missing out.
3) Back to Rock Band, I’ve been busy creating characters again. This time, no washed out digital camera pictures needed:

Hey look on your first comic tim and ray
I was waiting for the music from Ice Cap Zone to be playing in the background…what happened? Ray, you’re a little off this week as far as Sonic goes lol.
Without the cell phone games there’s about 9…hence the parenthetical “or soon to be”. And yes, I can’t count. It’s 22 not 12.
Sadly… I’d have all those gamer points… but the 50 for “the impossible dream”
impossible dream +50
Good enough, It wasn’t as good as last week’s podcast though… đ
It has been cold here too, -50 F with windchill some days…
Merry Christmas Ray And Tim.
Seasons greeting’s from Australia, where it’s not so cold! 27.8*C to be precise at 11:06am!
Just to clear a few things up, the Beatles game isn’t confirmed to be a rock band type game. The gameplay element is rumored to be different than the standard “play the song” style. One of the things I read was a visualizer would be involved somehow (which I can only imagine as being completely trippy). But it definitely won’t be a rehash of the normal formula.
Also, GH: Metallica has drums and vocals as well.
And I think Led Zeppelin would be the best for a rock band game, since they fit the formula perfectly. Too bad Jimmy Page is scared to give up his songs for that
