In A Pickle
Much has been made of Chun-Li’s enormous “man hands.” We thought we’d put them to good use in this comic, a departure from the typical retro/Nintendo comics we usually put out there. When it comes to fighters, I always preferred Street Fighter to Mortal Kombat, but really Tekken was my favorite. And let’s not forget all the wonderful Capcom and SNK fighters too… Anyway, hope you enjoy it, and if anyone is playing Street Fighter IV yet, let us know what you think of it!
There are two things I hate drawing the most: hands and muscles. It left me wondering why I ever agreed to do this comic…
At first I thought the pickle jar was a Puzzle Fighter gem =]
Also, the muscles look pretty good. As for the hands… well, I got the joke, so, it works.
And nice touch on the dropped pickle jar. I didn’t catch that at first.
I never got people’s obsession with Chun Li’s thighs (and now hands).
Dunno if that’s just me mistaking something for a finger, but it looks like Ryu has six fingers.
omg, he does! and what is that on chun li’s hand? is that her bones?! funny comic but not your best work ray….
Nice one. A good giggle first thing in the early morning helps the day go better.
And the look on Ryu’s face in the last panel is priceless. This is the face everyone will think of now whenever they type “OMGWTF?”
HAHA Ryu has knubby knuckles…awesome!
Nice comic guys! I personally haven’t played any of the Street Fighter games, but I did get the joke. I mean, I’ve actually tried to play it, but once I got the demo for SFTHDR (or whatever the name of it is), I discovered that I could only play the demo on local multiplayer. š
I love drawing muscles… seriously. I have a BLAST with them. Hands not so much but muscles are epic to draw. Ironically enough, I have a problem getting the right amount of muscles in the female figures when I draw them.
Not much love for this one. Perhaps because I’ve never played this game? I don’t really know. And Ray, it was never your choice…
Whoa, Ryu has knubby fingers. How awesome is that?
This is one of the first comics I didn’t get without reading the description. I’m really not into fighting games. (Except Brawl.)
Hate them or not, Ray. Those muscles look pretty damn good.
Any reason you and Ctrl-Alt-Del decided to do a comic on the same game this week?
http://cad-comic.com/comic.php?d=20090218
Also, AWESOME first panel!
Chun li is just creepy. She has that manly-female tone and its creepy.
But Ryu’s expression in the last panel is great.
I guess Ryu doesn’t need help after all, considering he dropped the accursed jar.
Nah, they’re knubby knuckles. We don’t say Ray has knubby arms, we say he has knubby elbows, since the knubs replace the typical masculine elbow, aka Tim’s elbows. In this case, Ryu has knubs on his knuckles (which are on the finger), and the said knubby knuckles replace a typical masculine hand figure (aka Chun-Li’s knuckles).
Just a shot in the dark here but I’m guessing it’s because the GAME COMES OUT THIS WEEK. Also people have been complaining about Chun Li’s hands from day 1. Apparently some people want realsim in their cartoons while watching Dragonball Z and all it’s peglegged characters, go fig.
Well, I didn’t know that.
I also.
The comic was okay, I suppose, but its one of those that I just didn’t get. So… Okay. :\
I didn’t really notice anything bad about the muscles Ray, so quit worrying. š
I love Ryu’s expression. And although I didn’t get the joke at first, I still found it funny after reading the description.
No prob.. although in hindsight I realized the all caps was rather jerkish. Apologies headed your way Gado
Just a thought, I think the comic would be funnier if you inserted a panel b/w the 2nd and 3rd panel where neither of them are saying anything…a moment of anticipation, I guess…I just kinda quickly scrolled down after reading the 2nd panel, and the punchline wasn’t as effective.
(oh, you see what I did there? punchline? Last panel? PUNCH-line? I crack me up sometimes š )
Your hands look funky…..
Is it me or does Ryu have SIX fingers on his right hand?!
Yup! Looks like it. Nice catch.
I looked back several times, and I can’t tell if it’s six fingers or just the pinky finger and then the rest of his palm that doesn’t have a finger folded over it…I’m tempted to say there’s only 5 fingers and the rest of his palm, but there is an extra knubby knuckle…Ray, you gotta let us know, man! Which is it?
lame lame lame.
come on ray… you can do better than that.
It’s true. I suck so bad at hands that I gave Ryu six fingers on accident. I had created that extra pinky line with the intention of continuing it into the rest of his pinky later on. But when I was sweeping by and placing his knuckles on each finger, that line through me off, I placed one too many knuckles, and six fingers were born.
I’m sorry everyone. I hope you will find it in your hearts to forgive me. Don’t embarrass me in front of commenter ‘Black n White.’
Lol. This is the best comic I’ve seen yet that was up on making fun of Chun-Li’s massively large man hands. I absolutely love it.
I smell another inside joke. XD
But anyway…uh…yeah, I’m not one of those deluded (or diluted apparently) followers. Sorry. The first panel made me chuckle because it was totally random how he’s trying to open a jar of pickles, but I didn’t care much for the punchline. I blame my dislike of fighters with original characters (i.e. Brawl, X-Men, etc. okay).
ray, its cool, everyone makes mistakes. its when you make them too often that it becomes a problem.
Hey, I just started to read your comics yesterday, and I thought they were funny. I even read all the older ones (I have alot of time on my hands…) and I’m surprised you’ve done one on what a sega version of Super Smash Brothers would be or the racist “fiasco” with Resident Evil 5.
Now for something that’s relevent to this week’s comic, I have to say, I’m surprised that those wrist things aren’t cutting the circulation off to her hands. She really needs to be tested for ‘roids.
Well, i think i picked the wrong comic to “rise from my grave”, but oh well. I’ve been reading since the beginning (well, comic #4, but I immediately read the last 3), and have listened to all the podcasts since. The Rise From Your Grave segment recently inspired me to start commenting. Well, time to talk about the comic. First, what are those vein-like things on her hands? Maybe it’s a result of man hand-itis. However, the look on Ryu’s face in the 3rd panel made me crack up. Finally, I would’ve liked to have seen a fourth panel, maybe of chun-li accidentally crushing the pickle jar or something. Well, anyways, okcg (maybe if I was a street fighter fan I would’ve thought it was funny, but every comic can’t be funny to every audience).
I have to say that I’m REALLY freakin tempted to make the expression on Ryu’s face in the last panel into an avatar.
It just NEEDS to be done, I swear.
Done. Here’s the url from my gravatar profile. Hope it works. http://en.gravatar.com/userimage/6897326/4a54acdd93f00eac4028dc61bc4373db.jpg
NCG! But there’s nothing at the top of the page! Gasp! The logo is… Plain!
Tim, just saw that I can edit comments. Yay!
So… 2P Start! and Ctrl+Alt+Del share the same subject material this week.
CAD’s art: always classic
2P Start!’s art: considering it’s outside of Ray’s comfort zone… pretty good.
2P Start!’s scenario: pretty clever way of using the joke
CAD’s scenario: a bit more believable as far as Street Fighter goes.
CAD’s use of the Chun-Li joke: funny but dialogue makes it harder to follow.
2P Start!’s use of Chun-Li joke: shorter and more to the point, but Ryu’s face in the last panel pushes it over the top. (Too bad geekyninja already claimed it as an avatar š
Fatality! 2P Start wins! Flawless victory!
Wait a sec…
geekyninja, I present you with this shiny new internet.
CONGRATS YOU HAVE WON THE INTERNET SIR!
EDIT: And hooray for the ability for editing to be returned! Swiit!
I’ve played Street Fighter IV for a few hours. I’ve played a lot of Alpha 3 Max on the PSP and I’ve had no idea of what I was doing, so I got this game because it promises to teach the moves. Well, it turns out that this mode, the challenge mode, is so hard that I have to look up online how to do each combo. They’re trying to cater to the casual audience with this game. I’m a hardcore gamer that is happening upon fighting games. Is it a bad sign that the only reason I’m still playing is the cut-scenes and the general consensus that this is a great series?
Now Ryu and Chun-Li both have freaky hands.
Wait a second… He drops the jar of pickles in the last frame! I didn’t notice that until the sixth read… Also, his headband stands on end!
This is awesome. Beyond awesome.
Well, even if she has huge palms she’s sexy <3
She’s got . . . “man hands”. Poor Chun-Li.
The trick with fighting games is this. Get a friend or a group of online “usuals” around your skill level. Try all the different characters until you find one that “clicks” with you style in regards to aggressiveness and variety of attacks. Then focus on THAT character for a bit. So far my only issue with this version is accepting the ultra meter where you have to receive damage to build it up but blocking barely builds anything. I would have preferred a little more power behind the block to be gathered and crank UP the amount of power you build when you focus attack from a defensive position. This way that meter is still tied to your opponents offense but not so much reliant on “revenge.” Also, Seth is a jerk.
Once you sync up with a fighting game, you’ll find you’re playing on a whole other level. But the bar for entry is still high. SFIV is a lot more “casual” friendly than SF III (my personal fav series aside from KOF) but watching it played on a high level is a whole other thing.
If you have Live, you can probably find either me (Gamertag: NME Se7eN) or DJ playing this game. Just send a message sometime if I’m on and I can help you out some. What you need more than anything is training and a group of similar skilled opponents. When the local Game Crazy had a SCIV tourney, a friend and I basically spend time practicing the defensive aspect of that game and we ran to a tournament filled with mashers. Mashing can get you far, but watch some videos of Diego sometime…
There aren’t enough quotes on this discussion yet, so I decided to add in. By the way, thanks for the shiny new internet, my old internet was a little bit rusty.
If that whole “If your hand is bigger than your head, you have cancer” thing is true, Chun-Li would have every known form of cancer, six unidentified forms of cancer, small pox, polio, and pneumonia… in that order.
Hahaha! Ouch, tummy hurts!!! Hahahahaha!!!
The first panel is totally awesome. I love the idea that Ryu is having problems opening a pickle jar despite an apparent super human effort (as evidenced by the psychedelic background.) I would love to see that as a background.
Now, I wouldn’t say the rest of the comic is bad, per se, but I can’t really say it is good either. I get the joke and I think it should be funny, but it never actually made me laugh. Also, Chun-Li looks awkward. Kind of like man with breasts tacked on. We can probably chalk that one up to Ray’s lack of experience drawing busty females.
Overall, first panel is gold, the rest is so-so. I’ll count it as a win though for that first panel.
Ryu has 6 fingers in all 3 panels. Do I detect some copy and pasta on Ray’s part here?
No problem dude.
That’s just… creepy, dude…
A message for those of you who follow the comments through an RSS feed: I finally got around to updating the logo for this comic, so come on back and take a look!
Great one Ray. Love the logo for this one. Its a “Super Ultra Turbo Hyper Extreme” Logo!
I just realized my typo that’s now been here for like 2 or 3 days now ><.
Great logo!
Now all it needs is the text “Here comes a new challenger!”
I’m not sure whether this is a compliment or an insult, but I think the logo may be funnier than the comic.
That logo is so horribly true to the series.
Eh… sure “Super 2p Start! Ultra Turbo Hyper Extreme Edition The Movie [The Game]” sounds good but im waiting for “2p Start’s ULTIMATE Comic Collection” that’ll have everything! (except sonic 3 and knuckles)
2pstart the movie?!?!?
Tim Harding (played by Tim Harding) is a cruel manager who only cares about his own money. Ray Hargreaves (played by Ray Hargreaves) was just a young boy, with knubby elbows, looking for a part time summer job. Unfortunately for him, Tim shows no mercy to his artists and as summer goes on, Ray realizes he may have made the gravest mistake of his life.
Coming to theaters near you
blahblahblah great comic guys
blahblahblah best comic series ever
blahblahblah you brighten up my sad dreary day
you know the drill
Wow. Comic was great, but the logo was amazing-er.
About the logo, you forgot the random letters like E.X or X.P or S.P or +B š or greek letters like Alpha or Beta or Gamma.
And for “The Game”, it would be cross compatible between the Wii and DS (like with the upcoming Final Fantasy game). In the DS version, you play as Ray, creating comics with the stylus while becoming arthritic. In the Wii version, you play as Tim and use the remote to crack the whip!
Rated T* for Teen; for Comic Mischief;
Coming Summer 2010 – also WiiSpeak compatible for Podcast creation
*Game experience may change during online play as fans increase
=]
Don’t forget Z, GT, or Chop till you Drop š
No, they should’ve added “75728”
(That’s right, I just commented on a comic. GASP!)
Ok, I give. It HAS to be said:
“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya.
You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
Did I miss why this had to be said? I’m all for a Princess Bride quote (awesome movie), but I feel like I’m missing something.
Why, the six-fingered man, of course! =]
uhmmm why does the pickle jar disappear in the last panel?
Oh yeah, duh. >_< I should’ve gotten that…
it doesn’t, he drops it, you can kinda see the top of the bottle near his bottom hand
The best part of this comic is the banner.
No, I hate how you keep flaming the comments and putting me up on a pedestal. Just be nice and we will be nice back, If you raise a ruckus, there will be consequences to pay.
When I saw the logo, I literally burst out laughing! I think the logo is actually my favorite part! I haven’t laughed like I did seeing the logo then I have in a LOOOONG time.
Super 2P START! Ultra Turbo Hyper Extreme Edition The Movie (The Game)
I have to say, my earlier comment about this being just an okay comic was changed by both the logo, and the Inigo Montoya comment, which made me burst out laughing. Too bad I can’t edit my comment (just kidding). So, I will change my okcg to a ncg.
Alright I’ll stay in limits. But maybe we should let ray draw stuff that doesn’t give him much trouble for the next comic also I just got the logo.
I didn’t notice Ryu had six fingers until looking through the comments, despite the podcast being called Six Finger Discount.
Good comic, not great, and certainly not your best work, but still good.
“The Movie, The Game” part in the logo made me chuckle.
Now off to listen to the podcast
Wow, not as knubby elbows (did i spell that correctly?)
Woah, he’s right! The elbows don’t seem knubby! Neither Ryu or Chun-Li have them, they both have normal arms! (Although Chun-Li’s hands are another story XD)
Interesting.
I just figured why Chun-Li looks so strange. Her face looks like a Mii’s face, but Ryu doesn’t have a Mii face at all. That makes Chun-Li look more….masculine lol.
What game did that avatar come from? I’ve totally forgotten. Some old PC game I’m sure. DOS ftw.
Hmm, just read through some CAD archives. Looks like he posted the same idea, on the same day. Did a trailer come out or something?
http://cad-comic.com/comic.php?d=20090218 <- 4 fingers.
Bwahahaha!
Yeah I remember your hatred for hands… -_-
Comic#106;
So yeah, I went and found a copy of Super 2PStart Ultra Turbo Hyper Extreme Edition the Movie (The Game). But every time I get to the bonus stage with the pickles, I can’t seem to open the jars! What’s the trick to beating it? Do I HAVE to use Chun-Li!?
You did a great job with those muscles on Ryu, Ray. This is a great comic, and another one The Sky Fish described to me…
Simply wish to say your article is as astonishing. The clearness in your post is simply nice and i could assume you are an expert on this subject. Well with your permission let me to grab your RSS feed to keep updated with forthcoming post. Thanks a million and please carry on the enjoyable work.
