2P START! Live!: GDC09 Edition
March 30th, 2009
In this episode you’ll hear: Tim’s Black Doom Award that nearly leaves Ray speechless, how Nintendo owns the copyright to the alphabet, an age-old segment making its return, what Tim and Ray think of the new Zelda title, and why Ray still defends the ‘Temple of the Ocean King.’

Make the Jokes for you? (Isn’t what I do when I do guest comics?)
Ummm…. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails walk into a bar, Silver ducks…
🙂
If I had Tim’s question I would have asked what version of Sonic CD it was, but that was just me.
Maybe with the dumbed down gravity and difficulty, maybe I can defeat Airman! No matter how Try to dodge all his tornadoes he just kills me again.
Nooo, I would have loved to see an Obama and Sonic at the Special Olympic Games. People need to stop being so sensitive. The President of the United States should not be making those jokes, but if it had been anyone else it wouldn’t have raised such a controversy. Point is, everyone gets offended too easily. The PETA thing with the dogs is silly. Why doesn’t the dog community take a stand and be offended? Then they’d have a case. If Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (where you play as Americans killing Japanese) can sell well in… wiat for it… JAPAN!!.. then no one else has ANY room to be offended. (Sorry for the rant, lol)
Freeman? Gordon Freeman?! Let me get a good look at you, man! You haven’t changed one iota, how do you do it? Ahem, anyway, congratulations on moving out Ray!
Yay! Trivia for Two! Man, I forgot how much I missed that segment. Hopefully it’s back to stay? And I would have picked any of the choices other than Sonic CD, since that was the only game I played, and I remember the boss theme from it. I didn’t even consider that the Japanese version would have a different soundtrack.
I was hoping you’d talk about GDC. I was very happy about update 4.0U. Actually, I felt like I couldn’t play Paper Mario until I got the update, which was a lot harder than I thought. It took a bunch of tries to get it, the last of which only filled to 50%, yet the update still came through. Not really sure how that works, but I am very happy that it worked out. Oh, and Paper Mario’s great so far. 😀
I pretty much offered my opinion on Spirit Tracks back on the blog post. The train is definitely odd, but I’ll probably get over it at some point. I’ll most likely buy it, of course. And I agree with you about the Temple of the Ocean King, Ray. It really didn’t bother me that much. In all honesty, the part where you had to close the DS to imprint the seal onto your map. That took me forever to figure out. 😛
I thought the comic was pretty good. It didn’t neccessarily make me laugh out loud, but it was clever enough to make me grin.
Well, I can’t exactly say that I agree with Ray’s BDA, but I do see where he’s coming from. The thing is, Nintendo has said so little that appeals to me in the last year or so, that even this tiny scrap about 4.0 and Spirit Tracks is more exciting to me. However, I do want some good information at the next E3.
As for Tim’s, I had no idea that they even realeased Mega Man 2 for the iPhone and iTouch. That sounds absolutely horrible, and I’m glad that I got the Virtual Console version a while ago. I have to say though, this is one of the greatest (or is it worst?) BDAs I’ve heard in a while. I should really check out IGN’s review soon…
Hooh, that was tense. While I was listening to the Musical Misfit, the music just stopped for a moment (most likely because I opened a tab), and I thought I was about to lose my comment. Thankfully, I didn’t, and the music started back up shortly. So I’ll finish up with a Great Podcast Guys! It was pretty long, but I really enjoyed it. I might even dare say that it rivals Sonic and the Black Doom Edition.
hey guys great podcast. i was just wondering what the criteria is for for musical misfits. cause id really like to get one in.
Not the best podcast, but still funny. Anyway, what was up with the end when ray said, “That will do it for this weeks 2PStart Liiiiiiive!”? It’s obviously a sign of the end of days, sent through the one person everyone worships, Ray Haregreaves. I for one embrace the transition of power from Barack Obama to giant praying-mantis economy gods who want no more than to mate with the people left alive and eat us in the process! What? No, I don’t need therapy.
Wow, I haven’t gotten a comment of the month in a while. And I’m glad that made someone laugh, I thought it went over about as well as Shamwow infomercial at the Bunny Ranch. Those wanting that explained, I gotta keep it clean, sorry.
Anywho… now for the comments.
Temple of the Ocean King, to me, was a pathetic attempt to lengthen a short game. Many reasons wrong with that behavior but for sake of time, take Link’s Awakening. At various intervals, you have to stop your quests between dungeons to play their trading game and get some key to open the next dungeon. When I’m traveling 20-30 screens to fulfill this ridiculous agenda in poor game design, it makes me not want to play. Temple of the Ocean King isn’t some clever change to the Zelda formula. That came with the sailing mechanic and turning the overworld into an on rails shooter. Instead the temple was a clumsy roadblock essentially keeping you from progressing the game. I don’t mind solving a dungeon. And truth be told, I liked the stealth elements. But imagine this scenario…
Water Temple, OoT. You solve this dungeon to a certain point until you get the clue on where you are supposed to go next. However, on your way to solving that water temple the first time, you see all the different ways to solve it. But you can’t solve it that way. Because the designer wants you to come back to the Water Temple at least five times…. THAT’S what the temple of the ocean king was to me. To me, it’s the reason my copy of phantom hourglass still remains unbeaten.
Also, Tim’s correct. GDC is not the place for uber announcements. It’s a place to network, to discuss the financial downfalls of game design in certain veins, it’s a place to address hardware limitations, etc. If Nintendo pulled an E3 style press release the exact same year they have a huge E3 booth, I’d be disappointed. E3 is where the big three will hang out with their thang out. Leave GDC to the developers.
Okay note time:
1. Spiffy Wind Waker Tune in the intro there.
2. Yay for the return of Trivia for Two.
3. You really do like the music from The Thousand-Year Door huh? If I’m not mistaken, that was Rogueport.
4. Wow, it’s been a while, nice to see Topic of the Week again.
5. Okay, I thought the Wii update was crap. I went to try it out, and my choice was the Internet Channel which is currently on the SD card. It had to transfer My Life as King onto my SD card and the Internet Channel off, exactly what it was like before. Apparently it’s better with VC games, but I’m a bit ticked off actually that the Wii is unable to do what the Gamecube could do…I’m also still a bit mad that the Wii still malfunctions occasionally when my N64 is working perfectly.
6. Phantom Hourglass was bad. I have no problem with going through the levels again, though if I wanted to go back through levels with new abilities, I’d play Metroid because they do it much better. What really irked me was the stealth and the time limit. Both EXTREMELY (I cannot stress that enough) annoying by themselves. Putting them together made me want to slam my head into a wall. I can’t stress enough how horrible a design choice The Temple of the Ocean King was. It is the absolute epitome of my “Who thought that was a good idea!?!?” moments. Though I will agree that it was okay the final time because the stealth part was thrown out the window.
7. Nice Forest Life music in the background there.
8. Pretty good remix
9. I think TGS is apparently the time for big announcements. XD
10. I thought Nintendo’s Media Summit was good. Endless Ocean anyone?
11. Wait, so you can pick a Musical Misfits from any week? Fluffy Panda didn’t even comment last week…
My second comment of the week! Tim, Ray, you have both made me a very happy camper. 🙂
Man, I totally agree w/ Tim. I stopped where he did, and it’s been 1.5 years since I picked it up again. My conclusion is, I need a friend like Ray, lol. Speed runs suck though. Unless there’s a game made of it, it’s dumb.
Point 1: Aww, they like us, they really like us 🙂
Point 2: Don’t really care too much about a lack of announcements, meh
Point 3: Ditto for Megaman.
Not much to say, but I liked getting to hear your dreamy voices for such a good length of time. 😀
Ah crud. Rouge.
All you got to do is make jokes about how Ray and Tim is sexy.
@roadjcat #5: what do you mean? I thought it worked great. I mean, it would be nice if it could run save files from it, but that’s not a huge deal. I just moved most of my channels to the SD card and have almost 1000 blocks on my Wii free, so I don’t have any issues with anything. Why would you need to move something back to the Wii? I mean, it does when you load it, but once you quit, it’s still on the SD card. That way, you can run either the Internet Channel OR MLaaK from the SD card, where before you would have to move one onto the Wii yourself when you wanted to use it. I had deleted the Nintendo Channel before because it took up so much room and wasn’t worth it, but now I can just keep it on my SD card where I don’t need to worry about room. Also, I don’t get what you mean by “it can’t do what the GameCube could do”, although if you’re referring to something mentioned in the podcast, I haven’t listened to it yet.
Also, I’m in the “didn’t mind the TotOK” club. In fact, I even went so far as to run through it enough to be able to finish with a full timer left.
On Link’s train conductor outfit: I think what’s going to happen is Link will start as a conductor, then once he starts on his quest, he will get his standard clothes. It happened in WW (he had his PJ’s for like 5 minutes) and TP (he had his other clothes for a while), so that’s my guess. I’m not a huge fan of the conductor’s outfit, so I’m hoping it’s not something he wears whenever you use the train.
Um… that wasn’t you…. Ray, the Musical Misfits really did just drop right in the middle of the song and picked up 3-5 seconds later. It’s in the actual audio, because I could back up and do it again. and again. and again. 🙂 You might want to fix that for future grave risers… 🙂
Great podcast all the same. 😀 I’m not about to make a wall of text about it, I’ll leave that to the pros above.

But furthermore, I don’t mind that all the floors in hyrule get updated to a more steampunk-ish theme, Since that would make some things make more sence. (like Bombchus from OOT, how would they work? they are almost like an intricate wind up from 100 odd years in the future! The hookshot also brings questions to mind.)
Hey guys, sorry for the lack of comments lately. I have a question about “Rise From Your Grave.” Did I have anything to do with it’s creation? Becuse you started it shortly after I made that comment about how much I love this site, and you seemed worried about choosing those types of comments as CotW. So you thought of a way to show these comments in another way. Just a thought.
Reposting this on a newer podcast.
I don’t know about you specifically, but around the time it was created, there were a lot of people doing that same kind of thing. For a couple months, CotW was going to the now dubbed “grave risers” more than it was going to regular posts, and so they split off the grave segment to give regular posts a chance again.
Changes? Ch-ch-ch-changes!
Yay, Trivia for Two!! Although Tim’s question was kind of lame.
I think the train is a step forward in time. I mentioned it in the forums, but Link is the Hero of Time. Just sayin’
And TotOK was soo frustrating. After a few times, I actually got bothered by it. It felt like a cop-out for a new dungeon. I would much prefer it if they had just made it one dungeon and added a boss or a whole other temple. I dunno, it felt lame.
On Ray’s BDA, I just don’t think that Nintendo has anything big to announce. Honestly, the only thing I see is a 2D Metroid (which is me spit-balling) or a Wii Zelda. But that’s just my thoughts/hopes.
Ray’s making me feel so bad for him. And screw Capcom for this. This is definitely the worst BDA so far, except maybe the SatBK when it got its own episode.
Ok, I’ll throw a bone. *rises from grave*
I’ve been reading for a few weeks now, and I have to say 2P Start is the funniest video game comic I’ve read.
Weird, I’m playing Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door right now, and you used a lot of music from that.
Not all of them are. OoT (and MM) Link is the Hero of Time, but WW (and PH) Link is the Hero of Winds. Just sayin’
I don’t have time to listen to the podcast again right now, but somewhere in it when Tim and Ray were talking about The Temple of the Ocean King one of them said that people asked for something different and when the got it they complained. I would like to point out that what people asked for is something different and good. I didn’t really like PH. There were many things done differently in the game and I think that for the most part the changes made were either poorly executed or downright bad design decisions. I got the feeling that many of these poor decisions were made simply to be different. It is not enough to be different, it must also be good.
And in case anyone thinks I am being to harsh on Nintendo I would like to point out that they chose to be judged this way. They claimed to be the great innovators. I am just holding them to their word.
C) I agree that the Wii update is a tad late, but better late than never. I am amused that Activision and EA essentially got it to work months before Nintendo did. But now us “geeks and otaku” can finally enjoy the benefits of slightly more accessible storage space. The last VC title I got was Secret of Mana (which I still need to finish, agh) but WiiWare might keep things going (Word of Goo is full of win, btw) and I’m not really sure where the Virtual Console Arcade is going to end up.
D) Tim’s BDA was right on the money. I remember reading about a planned MM2 release for iPhone and was horrified. I once tried a Super Mario Bros app on an iPhone with the same idea of a touch d-pad and it was very difficult to control. I couldn’t imagine how a fully functional MM2 would play.
E) Good to know some of my older Musical Misfit suggestions are still in the running. In the meantime, here’s a new one for whenever. Though, it may not be a “misfit” as much as “just a song I like”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KKW3MT-8PU
F) Nice Mega Man ring tone there Ray. I used to use the tune that would play right after you select a boss/stage. Now I opt for Snake’s codec call instead… =]
haha 😛
Are you bothered by unsightly prepubescence?
Melt your childhood away with NEW, Mega Man 2 for iPhone!
Enjoy amazing NEW low-gravity gameplay!
NEW shorter levels!
NEW easier bosses!
Mega Man 2! Like real Mega Man 2, but is for iPhone. Mega Man 2 do not
eatplay.(See: Toy Food)
Used? It isn’t past tense like I said earlier. XD Music from Super Paper Mario too, though oddly none from the original…which was the one with good music. XD
I refuse to play spirit tracks due to the fact that:
1. I’m not on a boat
2. There are no buoys to climb
3. Link is not wearing a nautical theme patched afghan
4. I prefer a big blue watery road to train tracks
I can just imagine how the first cutscene is gonna be…
*Link is sitting around about to pour cereal*
*a paper falls out of the box*
Link: Cool! A train ride for three! …who am I gonna take? Hmmm…. [insert new fairy’s name here] aaaand…..*looks at Linebeck*……..T-Pain!
1. Nintendo has failed us, accept it and move on.
2. TotOK wasn’t horrible. Maybe it wasn’t that good, but horrible no. And roadjcats reason for not liking the temple seem more like he sucks at stealth than anything.
Perhaps. But I’ve yet to realize why standing in one place waiting for enemies to leave is fun.
^^^ It’s called stealth Roadj. If you’re bad at something admit it. I suck as a GH/RB drummer, I know this, and I accept it. Accept it if you’re not good at stealth.
I don’t care what it’s called and I’m bad at it because I can’t stand to do it for more than two seconds. And that still doesn’t tell me why standing in one place waiting for someone to leave is fun.
I don’t see why farm simulators are fun. To each his own Roadj. You’re impatient, something I’ve been able to tell from our SF matches.
Yikes. Totally missed this one.
I regret it! That Mega Man Black Doom Award was fantastic!
Hey guys! I’ve been watching this site for a couple of months now, and I decided to “rise from my grave.” I also didn’t want to be mauled by vicious nazi dogs. Awesome comic and podcast, keep it up Tim and Ray!
I like stealth based gameplay, but I don’t think it was done well in PH. I never felt stealthy.
I think these types of games are boring also.
Well, I’ve never played a game focused on stealth, and any game where they just throw it in is pretty bad…
Well whatever. If Harvest Moon was strictly a farm simulator, I’d hate it to. It’s the whole aspect with the rest of the town. It’s more about the people than the farm IMO.
Come on Ray, how can you not see what Nintendo is saving for E3, it’s so obvious.
Yay! I finally listened to this one. A bit late, but it was good. I was thinking of not leaving a comment since Tim complained about people commenting in old comments in the podcast, but I thought he could suck it up for one comment.
I felt so bad for Ray during the megaman black doom. I felt that every word Tim said was slowly killing Ray. I halfway expected Ray to die at the end with the explosion noise going and Tim gaining Ray’s poers.
Well then sorry but I am going to continue to annoy you Tim 🙂
(yes you are going to have to listen to the pod-cast to know what I am talking about)
1. Trivia for Two! One of my favourite segments
2. Ray Cheated. Tim is eliminated.
3. Link to the Past, come on Link to the Past
4. So no, it isn’t pure Sega it sounds like
5. The one I wanted had better Music
6. Although this Trivia for Two had to much well, you know Music and the song was way to long.
7. Tim Cheated, Ray is also eliminated!
8. That makes me win.
9. Wait Tim got it wrong, twice, that makes him win!
10. But I still win!
11. So Ray wins I guess…
12. I still say Ray is eliminated
13. Ray is eliminated again
14. That means Tim definitly wins
15. Nintendo made some what?
16. New Nintendo things… a Zelda game! No LttP though.
17. I don’t have enough Downloaded stuff to need that. Yet (dun dun dun)
18. They did listen to you
19. They only listened to your podcast a week before the GDC09.
20. LttP isn’t done
21. LttP you should buy it should you not have it
22. Buy LttP
23. That is kinda small
24. Hopefully
25. Trains Plains are next then automobeals (hopefully never for either)
26. I really want them to make a 2D Zelda with a real overworld… Like LttP
27. I am going to do these more often now and try and have LttP in every comment on the podcasts like Roadjcats Rouge.
28. Yea the Train is out of place
29. But its magic or some crap
30. Boat should sail
31. He changes super soon its like the Pyjama Quest
32. Steam Boats is a good point

42. I didn’t finish the game cause of that.
43. 2D Zelda’s need to have LttP controls
44. Using the Darknut was pritty fun though
45. They fixed that in Spirit Tracks I guess…
46. I would like to get that
47. Invincable enimys are not supposed to be in Zelda game, Unless there stationary or totally predictable. Take LttP for reference.
48. I think it would have been a hilarious podcast reference if Town Hall had a registered Sex Offender (Tortimer)
49. Mine didn’t
50. This comic I glazed over
51. Tim wins again
52. Did I mention Tim winning
53. That is interesting
54. I didn’t think of other or find it funny
55. It is cheap, you should have used Tim’s idea
56. I support the Timocrats
57. All the other ideas were probably better
58. Because there Tim’s
59. To politacal, although Tim’s laugh makes me laugh.
60. That’s part of the podcast, neither of you know what your going to say and so your natural laughs add to the humour
61. Uranium
62. I also plain on mentioning that in every giant post
63. I like dogs
64. Ah the remix. Wait for it to finish to continue on with the podcast
65. Play the LttP boss battle music in my head
66. Rise from your grave is way better once you sanctuary music it
67. Yes it was, and that was a failed segue
68. They are strange
69. That makes NO sense.
70. Yea PETA wants you to die to the dog
71. PETA supports human murder to save an animal
72. I think PETA should be mad at the bad guys in the game for training the dogs to be murderers
73. That was a funny comment
74. I think that was the point of that comment
75. Come on sanctuary music
76. Nope not yet, darn
77. Why is that still funny
78. I am giving you lots of emails
79. Although they are not spam
80. Mua ha ha ha ha ha ha
81. I am annoying you then
82. Hopefully you can figure this out
83. Probably not
84. Fail
85. Grave risers are kinda not the most interesting part of the comment.
86. I got out eventually
87. I am throwing you a lot of bones now
88. The Bones are becoming bigger
89. This might be my biggest Bone
90. Start doing it for us again.
91. I do that…
92. BLACK DOOM
93. I have started giving those out
94. Nintendo gets a lot of those
95. Thats besides the point
96. That one over there…
97. They went back didn’t you remember that podcast
98. But Tim is right because he is Tim
99. can’t you remix songs
100. They took a vacation

110. wow, 3D joystick
111. Its ugly
112. Good Point
113. That is dumb
114. That would be a cool idea
115. That would be way better
116. My point exactly
117. and the Dpad would be better
118. No supprise there
119. Megaman shouldn’t be easy
120. Wrong!
121. WHY?
122. To hard before so they made it for casual iPhone gamers
123. That’s probably why I suck at SSBM
124. Music is off WTF
125. Good idea
126. Wow…
127. How hard would it be to port this???
128. … -_-
129. They just fail
130. Sonic hat xD
131. They should pay you 5$ per minute to play it, it sounds like.
132. That just breaks it
133. Alpha Beta
134. Microsoft anyone?
135. Thats why bosses only take 3 hits
136. Probably
