2P START! Live!: New Hacker Approaching Edition
May 4th, 2009
In this episode, you’ll witness the revealing of Toon Ray’s partner – including plenty of great screenshots (which are included in this post for those without M4A) You’ll also hear what ‘violent’ game Ray ‘accidentally’ played as a child, his distaste of lifeless characters, what anti-war protesters have to do with videogames, and Ray can’t help but rail on a Sonic title after the show’s over.
But no musical misfits, sorry – I’ll get to one of your picks next week…

Pictures Used In The Podcast
OMG 2 firsts in one week!!!!! WOW!!!! Full Comment to Come!
hey the podcasts cuts out at the BDA! That gets my BDA!
Thanks for the heads up, zijjh – I’ll have it fixed in a moment.
i cant wait to hear this one…the pics look awesome enough as is!
Should be fixed now.
“Hey kid, turn around. BAM!”
Ray, what did you do to that kid?
Ray hacking his Wii??? Gasp!! Scandalous.
And I can only imagine that characters are insanely challenging to make. I remember watching a Pixar “Making of” for the Incredibles, where they talked about how tough it was for making human clothes and stuff for the first time. Anyway, that’s what those pictures reminded me of.
Woah, missed the bottom of the shoe. But I still caught the shirt logo.
TimTim! And the endorsement must be where all the money comes from!! It all makes sense now.
No replacement character instead of Black Doom?? BOOOO!
Hahaha. First, you say that you aren’t Sonic bashers, and then Ray’s BDA is to…. Sonic Team. I’m not saying anything, I’m just sayin’
The only thing I would say against the movie argument (this is just to play devil’s advocate) would be that you physically choose to kill someone in a video game. You aim and fire at them, whereas a movie is just something you’re watching and have no control over. I do agree with that, although I think neither is a “killer creator” Just figured that’d be the argument someone would use against that.
Stafy has always jumped! I’m pretty sure that was shown in the original Stafy update on Brawl.network (whatever the site was).
Shadow the Hedgehog is many things… unfortunately, underrated isn’t one of them. Definitely the $50 I want back the most.
Uh oh, Ray’s on a Sonic rant. Do I dare how much longer the podcast has left? I’m thinking north of 2 minutes. Aaaand, I was right. Oh dear.
Quick statistics:
Approximately 15% of 2P Start comics either feature, reference, or comment on the Sonic franchise. This does not include references for the sake of reference, such as Ray playing with a Sonic figure or Sonic running in Echochrome.
I merely state the statistics; interpret them as you’d like.
Please stop this. At least listen to the podcast then comment. Seeing the first post is nothing more than declaring it’s the first post is getting well… I won’t say…
BTW, Ray… if you think your workspace is geeky and embarassing to show…

Well I enjoyed the podcast but not much to say.
1. Is there a Rouge trophy in Brawl? Because if there is, I seriously need it.
2. Tim didn’t say “How dare they!” during rise from your grave. đ
3. The music that was being played during the Sonic BDA sounded, like ten billion other songs, really familiar. I want to say it’s from Paper Mario again.
4. Yeah, I think the still characters were the least of your worries when the trees in the background look like that.
5. I said my opinions might change on Sonic Heroes after I started playing it for the first time since it’s release…and they did. I now see how it’s the downward trend. Every level to me feels very samey only with a new frustrating element attached to it, whether its rails or the pinball machine or whatever. There’s some part of every level that drives me absolutely insane. Let me play as Rouge in a good game other than SA2 please.
Perfect on Toon Tim, Now hack Luigi into me and we can call it an award winning mod.
Since my next Guest comic is well on the way, I have one question to ask you guys (Tim and Ray): What is your favorite animal? I need this question answered before I can go farther in my Comic’s Progress…
I definitely got a Smash Bros Dojo! vibe from the beginning of the comic. The other small details are very impressive, and I probably wouldn’t have ever noticed them unless you had mentioned them.
I was expecting Ray to make Toon Tim at some point, but I’m surprised that it was so soon. Nice job!
Ray’s BDA was just awesome. There were so many things wrong with that single screenshot that I’m excited for the game’s release, just to see the reaction here on 2P.
2P Climbers? Sounds like a cool idea. What’s that about not having violent tendencies Ray? You’re wanting to punch a kid for liking Shadow the Hedgehog! đ
So finally, Nice Podcast Guys! It was short, but solid.
And peach into miley. your so inconsiderate d3vin
Oh. I forgot to talk about Shadow. Honestly, it was not that bad. The whole premise was absolutely stupid, but if you strip away the stupid story and the “Damn” every two seconds, you end up with a game actually very similar to the Sonic levels in the Adventure games. It’s a shame, I think it could’ve been a good game. If only they’d tried to make a normal Sonic game instead of a mature one. They got lucky with Rouge, with her being the “sex symbol” and all. If they had focused on Rouge’s “sexyness” as much as they focused on Shadow’s “dark” past and tendencies, Rouge would probably be my least favorite Sonic character.
Great Podcast. I’m truely thankful for you finally adding the pictures to the blog post (I think that’s what it’s called), I hope it’s permenant. :D. Also, is Toon Tim not yet uploaded? ‘Cause I want a Tim vs. Ray match ASAP >=)
Working on it. Hopefully by 11PM PST.
Hey, roadjcat. Turn around. BAM! (only kidding)
But to say that Shadow the Hedgehog’s stages are “actually very similar” to the Sonic Adventure stuff is… well… I can’t even find the words quite frankly. Unfortunately (or thankfully) I’ve lost a lot of the details now and can only remember the generalities about how horrible the game is. But I almost have an urge to play through it again, just so I can dedicate a two-hour podcast to everything wrong with it. With enough money offered, I might just do it.
Shadow is underated, I mean the entire purpose was how bad it was. It is underated in terms of how bad it is!
ya, I wouldn’t do it again, but I thought since it was the second in a week it was exciting. I think I unlocked an achievement somehow.
Isn’t Stafy a guy?
Just a few things,
1.
IfWhen go to non Sonic comics, may I suggest going back to Pixel Vision? I’ve been waiting for a while for this, and now seems to be a good time to bring it up, what with that … comment. I know time doesn’t pass in (most) video games when they aren’t visited, but Lace has only passed (half of?) mission 1.2. Perhaps I should point you to Achievement Unlocked.
3. Great job all around guys.
Not looking good. Expect it by morning? Hopefully?
Well, it’s not really my site to dictate policy so perhaps I was out of line. Just seems a pet peeve of mine. I know, nerdy thing to nerd rage about but still.
Okay, well it’s been a while and Sonic games seem to be a lot worse than I remember them being so this could be no different. Of course, I tended to drop the guns and vehicles and just use the homing attack which made them a bit more similar. It’s just that right now, if you asked me what was wrong with Shadow, I would respond “Vehicles, Guns, swearing, multiple endings that were extremely similar, and several annoying missions types.”
I’m almost tempted to play it again myself, see if it’s not as bad as I’m saying it is.
Oh and technically, I didn’t say Shadow was underrated. I just said it wasn’t that bad. XD Though I would agree that it was underrated…just not very much.
Also, I’d prefer a 2 hour podcast dedicated to the awesomeness of Rouge.
I just realize that you guys havent had a true “T-T-T-t-t-opic of the week” in while. There’s always been comic talk, internet loot, or BDA to take over that. Not much of a problem, but i just kind of like the uniformity of a section of the main topic being the “t-t-t-t-topic of the week” instead of the “lesser” sections. Not that the other ones arent important too.
I wasnt counting episode 73 just to say.
And Zero Suit Samus into Lace, and Link into the GameStop employee and Ice Climbers into the logo stick figures. We can also hack MetaRidleyR27 into MetaRidley!(or Meta Knight)
Yay for last minute ideas!
Tim forgot to say “How dare they” in the Rive From Your Grave segment.
…what?
Actually it’s pronounced “Wise fwom youw Gwave” (hehe jk)
XD I love hearing the “How Dare They” everytime.
Texture swapping is how I got into Photoshop and eventually how I got into Graphic Design.
Here’s a few examples of the first textures I messed around with in the free-to-play game, WarRock, back when it was still in beta and really easy to change the textures.

It’s also why I really enjoy PC games, these are so much easier to swap out with custom textures.
This is one of my favorites that I use now in Team Fortress 2:

Enjoyable podcast as always, guys.
P.S.: Wanting to strangle someone on the internet is completely normal. The day someone invents some way of doing that across the internet, is the day that person becomes very, very rich.
If getting a single first post achievement got you 0 points, why would there be a reward for doing it multiple times? Just saying.
As for Shadow the Hedgehog, I consider myself lucky for finishing it even once. I’ve always wanted to go back and get the “true” ending just to have a sense of finality. My biggest problem with the game was the mission objectives. Having to kill every enemy of a certain type or faction got old quick. Finding those secret disks, as well as any other items was irratating as well. The only ones I didn’t mind were the ones where all you had to do was get to a goal, mainly because that didn’t force me to teleport back to the beginning and scour the entire level just to find one soldier or Black Arms that I missed while I was running, like I assumed I was supposed to do in such a game.
Needless to say, Shadow the Hedgehog wasn’t a very good Christmas gift that year. đ
haha I loved the commentary…also I’m just wondering don’t you need another texture hack…*cough*ray gets married in a sonic suit(could be a texture hack of sonic)*cough*
A. That is one thing I do like about character creators (be it Rock Band, EA Sports games, what have you) it’s fun to put yourself in the game. Before such a thing became commonplace, I must admit my 4th grade self was so enamored with games I decided to make my own comic involving my cats being sucked into video game worlds. Each one revolved around my cats helping out the protagonists. Of course, the downfall to it all was Sonic. I bit off more than I could chew and decided to make one comic per stage rather than one comic per game. Didn’t make it pass the Green Hill Zone and quickly ran out of ideas/interest. And there it sits to this day.
B. once again Ray confesses his hatred of all things Lego. ::shakes head:: (kidding)
Thanks for the images and the great work on Smash Tim and Ray! đ I love ’em. Very artistic especially from Mr. Artist. I cannot believe you spent so much time on the money, but wow :D.
I would have loved it if Ray had taken all this time to make these textures, and like in a few days Nintendo released some kind of free DLC for brawl for Mii integration into the game, or a character creator, with the ability to customize moves and final smashes
How dare he!
Hey! Those characters look curiously suspiscious to Ness and Lucas…
OMG Ray hacked the game! I just assumed that he went to Sakurai, and convinced him to allow Ray to input a Toon Tim and Ray into the game for a special limited edition. Then Ray took that edition and published it for us.
These Hacks used to be good đ
You know, what’s the point of model hacking Sonic into Shadow when the game already has a Shadow model? Of course, you’d possibly still need to deal with the skeleton, but if you’re model hacking I’d assume you could probably do that anyway. You’d still need Super Shadow, but you only need to change the black to yellow really.
Well shouldn’t he hate Knuckles then? I mean he has Lego on his shoes..
Wait… IDEA!
LEGO SONIC! Even if the game ended up bad, they’d probably still make actual Sonic figures to market the game, and think of all the fun that could be had with that! =D
Also, while we’re at it, we need Lego Mario figures, too.
And no, I was totally not aiming for comment of the week here. Or maybe I was. =P
SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!
…what?
