2P START! Live!: Tangent Disagreement Edition
June 22nd, 2009
In this episode, you’ll hear: the real reason last week’s podcast didn’t happen, Ray hating on Transformers 2, whether or not the Black Doom Award will need a new name, Tim’s non-stop distaste for the movie ‘UP’, and why Ray’s new iPhone 3G S made him feel like the worst person in the world.

Before I watch it I want to point out that the sketch of this week’s comic looks like the scene that Ema Skye drew in case 5 of the original Phoenix Wright.
http://www.court-records.net/screenshot/PW/emasketch.png
1. Am I the only one who thinks that Olimar looks a bit like Diglett in that picture? XD
2. Hey, you know what? In that apparent “zone” that Sonic Team has been in for 10 years…they made Rouge in that decade! 😛
3. I just read about Ray’s BDA about two seconds before I listened to this.
4. I’m also very happy to be hearing Metroid music in the podcast.
5. When I saw the trailer for Up, I thought to myself that Mythbusters already disproved that you can do that with balloons, but then I was like, “Hey, I don’t know what kind of technology they have, there’s special dog collars, maybe there are super magical extra strength balloons!” So I basically filed every ridiculous thing in the movie under that. The dogs and the airplanes was stupid though IMO, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. And Kevin, the best part IMO wasn’t totally unrealistic.
6. Hey, glad to see that I’m not the only one using Musical Misfits from the 6th and 7th generation!
Huh, this isnt up on the RSS feed yet. I was afraid there would be no podcast this week so I came here looking just in case 😀
I would also like to point out that Tim lies and the BDA archive is not up yet. 😀
The Black Doom Archive is up now…maybe Tim got it after your comment and before mine. I like the mad faces of Tim and Ray in it.
Good Podcast. but how can you not like Up, its a great movie!! Its funny and touching. I don’t want your baby to grow up in a world where her daddy doesn’t like Up. (ps. I also just saw Bolt last week, it was pretty good, I thought it was going to be terrible.)
I’m back from Colorado, and just in time for the new podcast! Sweet! I actually don’t have a lot to say this week, so I’ll just say Nice Podcast Guys! Oh, and I’m planning to see UP as well as Transformers 2. 🙂
Nice podcast! Really funny. I am really happy you mentioned my comment! 🙂
Before I listen to the podcast, I really have to say, I don’t think ‘UP’ was a bad movie at all. It was one of the most emotionally touching movies I’ve ever seen, and though I still feel like Wall-E was my favorite Pixar movie, I was really surprised at how much I was entertained by ‘UP’. And now, back to our regular programming, the podcast.
NPG guys, another great one! If SEGA is in the zone, what zone is it. Is it the Special Zone, because if it is it would definitely be the one from Sonic 1, that is most definitely the one that makes you feel like your high. The BDA’s are pretty bad. All in all, great.
Hey , I have the same iPod background as Tim!
I loved it when Tim asked how the toys in Toy Story didn’t act like toys… Nice podcast. I enjoyed it.
How about you make panel 2 into a shirt huh? We’ve all been wanting to make new merchandise… and maybe something pro-homosexuality might be good for the website.
That and the fact that we all want to save princesses together.
I enjoyed Up a lot. In fact, it is one of my favorite Pixar movies, right next to Finding Nemo. And I agree with Ray on the fact that I am not looking forward to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The first was terrible and I do not think the second will be any better.
~ Obilink
NPG! Tim, it really surprises me that ANYONE did not enjoy Up to some extent. It was funny, creative, touching, etc. etc. And it seems one of the reasons you didn’t like it (or at least why Ray thought you didn’t ) was not because you felt it wasn’t realistic enough, but why the unrealism was never explained. One of my favorite
Pixaranimated movies ever made any sense, and the tech was never really explained. You know what it was called? Monsters Inc. (very under-rated). “Why are there so many different types of monsters that can pretty much all talk and walk? How did evolution do that?” “How do the door lead to an alternate universe?” “How do screams power a metropolis?” I’m sure in that case you would argue that it’s not a human centered story. And even thou it’s the same director as Up, you said you like all of the Pixar movies before Up. I’m running a little long (animation and films are some of my passions), but I hope Ray mentions this net week so we can get another podcast completely based around Transformers and Up!igor,
Monsters Inc. was a great movie. It’s not the EXPLANATION that’s needed, it’s a world that is defined and understood by certain rules. None of Pixar’s movies make sense in the literal world, but they abide by a certain set of rules. If Sully started beating up other characters, it would be out of character, you’d wonder why he was doing that. If screams no longer powered Monstropolis, you’d wonder why since the movie already set up the parameters a different way. You would NOT accept an explanation like this: “It’s a movie about monsters, it’s not supposed to make sense.”
Unfortunately, Up does many things that don’t make sense in the context of the movie. The start of the movie is very REAL, a whole montage of Carl and Ellie’s life together with nothing weird or fantastic about it. Carl is now an old man that needs a stair elevator and walker to get around. All very real. Then all of a sudden, he takes off. At this point, I’m left asking many questions (that I won’t get into here). I was just very disappointed that they didn’t seem to settle on one or the other (fantastic or realistic), but instead, tried to do both, failing in my opinion, when they started explaining things that really couldn’t be explained (helium tanks, dog collars, etc.).
Tim, I think I thought the same exact things you did, but the whole introduction of the dog collar, that one thing showed that they could have other weird technology that we don’t know about and that was what kept the oddities from ruining the movie for me.
But maybe that’s just me. I absolutely love the National Treasure movies and it’s blatantly obvious that some of that stuff is wrong, but that doesn’t stop the movie from being entertaining, I’d say the same thing applies to Up.
What’s going on here Noah? Ray, that sounds a lot like when you put the calender with the 2P Start death date in the comic. If Tim hated Up, then I hope his daughter loves it.
Wait, why are the numbers going over the text?
Using a different computer than you normally do? My Mac does the same thing, but my laptop does not.
Nice call. You know if you had a bigger view of the last frame you would notice the large Blue Badger Head falling in to put an end to this unlawful squabbling.
It’s actually the browser, not the computer. I’m guessing you use Safari on your Mac? I just did a quick test, and it appears that IE and Firefox display the numbers behind the text, and Chrome and Safari display the numbers on top.
Yeah, and it kinda looks like Ray is about to stab Tim. XD I think the Blue Badger Pot should be something to add to Tim and Ray’s room. It’s very barren right now. I think it should fill up through odd occurrences such as this.
I always forget the Safari kinda sucks and it’s not necessarily the Mac’s fault. XD
It’s still better than IE, but Firefox is the best (which you can get for Mac, by the way).
And I forgot to mention before, but I also liked the similarities between Ray’s sketch and Ema’s drawing.
As far as Transformers goes, I enjoyed the first movie… up until I watched the special features. Because then I knew more about Michael Bay’s intentions with the film and I just found him a bit arrogant. Which of course has nothing to do with the film itself, but it makes me concerned for the second one. Which I will still see this week.
On Up… as a movie it’s fine. But as a Pixar film, I was disappointed. I’m used to Pixar films having some kind of theme; toys, superheroes, robots; something. Up had no such theme. Or maybe the theme simply was ‘life’. It’s just different. For me, that makes 2 Pixar films that are just ‘ok’; Up and Ratatouille. The latter being the only Pixar film I have not seen on the big screen.
Oh, I very much enjoyed Ratatouille. It might be my favorite pixar movie. The two I don’t like are Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles…I just didn’t care for those at all for some reason.
OH SNAP!!! I so do listen to the podcast.
Not too new for anything!
And sorry I’m a guy.
Straight and taken so don’t get any ideas Ray.
Uno if thats your boat hehe.
The MP3 version of the Podcast is just dead air from the starting of the Black Doom awards all the way to the end of the show. For some reason it just cuts out, So I can’t really leave a comment since I can’t watch the MP4 version (stupid brother). So I’m here without a Podcast, hopefully you’ll re-upload it or somthing Ray/Tim.
You don’t like UP Tim?!?!?!?! You you punt baby puppies in your spare time?!?!?!?!
I dunno, I find it kind of sad that despite the Transformer films getting a lot of negative buzz and having pointless scenes only put it for stabs at humor (like the one Ray was talking about) instead of things that actually revolve around, i dunno, the actual robots as real characters, it still ends up being one of the biggest grossing films of the year while other more deserving films (like Watchmen, which tries to be intelligent) don’t do so well. Michel Bay is then allowed to make another billion dollar summer flick that insults the audience’s intelligence and we all end up with lower quality entertainment. Thank you America.
Fixed. I apologize for the inconvenience.
I haven’t watched the movie yet, and I’m not sure if I will, but (and you might have heard/read about this already) this story concerning the movie certainly moved me: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/19/national/main5098924.shtml
Great choice on the Musical Misfits!
I thought “If the balloons were inside his house all the time, why didn’t the house get pulled up before they came out the chimney?”, is that bad?
I’ll probably be able to stand the movie, though.
Thanks, Ray. I’m going to listen to it right now.
P.S Happy Sonic’s 18th Birthday to you all. 😀
I hated Ratatouille, after watching the movie, i saw all of the components and put them together, but for some reason, it doesn’t seem to fit together. (rat+cooking+guy named after a pasta+evil guy+other evil guy+drugs/sex reference= winner???)
It’s an alright movie, just not the best. Pixar, your movies USED to be good.
lol, nice. But, I don’t know if I’d go that far. Wall-E was one of, if not the best Pixar movie and was nestled in between Ratatouille and Up.
Anyway, next up will be Toy Story 3 next year (woo!), followed by NEWT in 2011 (hm?), and then Cars 2 in 2012 (meh). Or so they say.
Yeah, It will be next to impossible to top Wall-e
I’m looking forward to newt. Sounds interesting.
Maybe it was because I had low expectations for UP after seeing the trailer that I was so blown away by it. I’m not gonna lie though, I had some issues with it. Like how Carl’s childhood idol is like 30 years older than him, but like 70 years later Carl seems much older. and also
the stupid dogs manning the fighter planes.
But yeah, looking forward to Toy Story 3…very much so!
Anyway, back to video game related stuff…
Here’s my vote for musical misfits for next weeks podcast, assuming Ray doesn’t have to chase down another crying little girl 😉

Ahh, classic Genesis music…. *sighs*
Didn’t know we were still suggesting Musical Misfits after last week. Very well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgnhrAxaz9E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6OTbdgt_Ms (Might’ve suggested that one before)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P7jdnU06ew
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cFIa29FXfM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yeTSmUR_Jk (We have too many upbeat musical misfits. :))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrQXiPiK4VQ
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/168734 (as this is from Castle Crashers I’m not sure if it’s still applicable, but it is seriously one of the catchiest songs ever)
I guess…that’s enough. XD
Not that I’m against fans of VG music, but shouldn’t we have a limit to how many suggestions we can put in per week? Unless Ray randomly chooses the Musical Misfit from a pool of all the users who suggested music as opposed to the actual songs, it doesn’t seem fair to those who only throw in a single song into the mix to have other people suggest 6 or 7 weeks worth of music.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against suggesting music…I just think it’d be more enjoyable for everyone if we all had a fair shot at musical misfits. That said, you do have a good taste in music. Especially Castle Crashers :]
I got a remix suggestion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB1N_aRTveQ&feature=related
Quoting Ray again from a couple podcasts back. That’s usually why I suggest so many.
Oh and catchy remix.
Also, I’m curious. If a song from a game was already accepted as a Musical Misfit, can another song from that game be accepted?
a bit late but, ”Ce pays me rend mauvais”, it’s actually prononced as Tim’s first try, eh, not ehz, well, you know wich one I mean
I’d consider another song from a previously chosen game fair material…there’s no reason one good song from a game should be overlooked just because another good song from the same game was picked already. The songs should be judged on it’s own merits, not on previous events. Meh, I can tell I’m getting too engrossed with this…but I can’t help it! I just love VG music!!
Well, can’t argue with that lol. In that case, I was saving this one for the next possible podcast, but let’s throw it in the mix 😀
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2GITxJJ50U&feature=related
Join the club. I’m probably worse though with my 4 imported soundtracks from Japan. XD
It’s funny, you tend to suggest the music from older games while I tend to suggest music from newer games. Between us we’ve got the whole spectrum covered. 😀
XD Sorry, I just thought of two more and I figured since Cardia was chosen, I had a got shot with these two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SEz3fJ_RJc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_PI91O0BEI
Also another quote from Ray. That is the reason why I suggest so many at once. See? I pay attention. 😀
yeah. I only took a year of French in high school but I seem to remember that, when in doubt, don’t pronounce the last letter of any word. ever.
I don’t think that’s always the case but it usually is.
Been hearing awful awful things about Transformers. Pretty much everything that was said in the podcast that I didn’t want to believe and worse. Wonder if I can just go ahead and save it on my Netflix queue yet…
Ok, 3 great movies:
The Shawshank redemption – Possibly the best movie ever made. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone if they haven’t seen it, so I’ll leve it at that. Be warned that it earns the R rating.
The Fiddler on the Roof – I can recommend this for anyone. Fantastic music and a great story.
The Untouchables – Actually only pretty good, but I really like it for some reason. I really like organized crime and mafia movies, and this one is pretty high on my list. I especially like the accountant.
oops, meant to post that somewhere else, I use this box as a spell checker
You know there is a spellcheck on the forums right?
