Let’s Try This Again…
August 6th, 2009
Had problems with the last post (and subsequent comments), so I deleted it entirely. The site now supports threaded comments. There are other minor changes (like smaller Gravatars), so sound off! If you don’t like something, I’m happy to change it!
So what was fixed from the last time exactly?
For a while, everything on the site was pushed to the left and was done in ‘crude’ HTML looks (not sure how to better explain it), but now its back to normal. I’m assuming that was the problem that was fixed.
Like I mentioned in the previous post, the smaller gravatars aren’t that big a deal, but it would be nice to have consistency with the size between the main site and the forums. Of course, for most people’s gravatar’s besides mine that’s not a big deal, so I don’t know if it’s worth fixing if I’m the only person who particularly cares about that.
Also, the preview removing a reply/reply emptying the text box issue still seems to be here. You probably know that, and I know it might not be an easy fix, I’m just reposting it so it’s still here somewhere.
Hey! It looks different now! The comments blocks are see through and the names don’t take up the side of a comment anymore! Awesome!
AND CKcheeseboy’s Avatar actually WORKS now! Awesome! 😀
Hm… so we seem to be scrapping the “Author Comment” thing then. Oh well. 😛
this is a test:
I’m sorry in advanced if this breaks something, but this is a reply to a previewed comment which, obviously, does not actually exist.
OK, so obviously it figures it out and doesn’t appear to cause any issues. That’s good.
And yeah, tustin, I fixed it a little while back…for some reason, even though .png can handle transparency, gravatar wasn’t keeping it when I uploaded pngs. Uploading it as a .gif with transparency, though, worked for whatever reason.
Plus this is a brand new one anyway since the old 80×80 one got squished and didn’t match the background.
I don’t see a difference. Now I feel stupid. XD
Um… It says that there are 7 comments, when there are only 6 plus CKcheeseboy’s funky quote thingy…
Just saying. 🙂
That’s the “threaded comments” thing Tim is talking about. It still counts as a comment, but now replys appear next to the comment they are replying to and not at the bottom (like this).
So he just broke it a little. Still, much worse things could have happened, so this isn’t that bad.
Ok, changed the gravatar back to 80×80. Do we like that better? (I know CK, you’ll have to change yours back, sorry).
It’s not that big a deal to change it (I kept the old one stored on gravatar so I just have to choose it to put it back), but now that it’s bigger, it goes outside the box on one-line comments like roadjcat’s above. I don’t really have a preference either way, but if bigger’s going to go outside the box, I think smaller looks a little better.
fixed, thanks.
The avatars are still outside of the box for me.
test
Nice, you were able to bring back the author comments!
And we’re like now included when we reply. haha
Tim = Blue
Ray = Red
Premium Members = Yellow (or green? let me know)
Others = Boring Grey
It’s kind of an off-white-ish yellow. XD But it’s AWESOME!
Can it be green though? 😀
Oh okay. That’s much spiffier. One thing I noticed. Dj had normal posts. Isn’t he premium?
Ok, weird. They were yellow when I was going to reply that I prefer yellow (but am still mainly indifferent). After hitting the reply button and refreshing the page, they turned green. Creeepy
Oh well I asked for them to be green. Now you want them to be yellow. haha. Whatever works then. I don’t really care, I just thought green would be spiffier.
I liked yellow a bit more as well. Gave it more of a “Gold Status” feel.
Well Okay, I thought the green stood out more.
Heh, well for me, I opened up Chrome to see if anything was different from Firefox, and by then the comments were green. Then I went to Safari and they were yellow again. I personally like green, but whatever is fine.
But FYI, in Firefox, the boxes are rounded off, but in Chrome, Safari, and IE, they’re squared off. Weird.
Well that’s two for green two for yellow. Why don’t we just put up a poll? XD
You’re right that DJ’s comments aren’t showing up as Premium. I’m guessing he’s not logged in when he comments.
Ah okay then. That’s what I figured.
And do we have any color choices other than green and yellow? haha. Kidding.
The yellow’s nice, but it’s a little hard to see up against the white background. I hate to seem demanding, but maybe making the yellow a bit darker would be more relaxing on the eyes?
That’s why I say we scrap the whole green vs. yellow thing and make it purple in honor of Rouge! Okay, I’m obviously not serious, but that was the exact reason I liked green better, because it was darker.
Orange wins. It’s dark and it matches my avatar. haha
Testing
One
Two
Three
Five
ooh, the comments are so colorful now.
testing……
Oooooh, a pretty star!
Meh, I kind of preferred the outlines myself.
🙁 I liked the pretty colors.
Also, as I made that last post, I got a 500 Internal Server Error…it’s back! 🙁
It doesn’t happen that often anymore, but yes the site still severely slows down at every even hour.
You mean odd hour (east coast woot woot) 😛
I think Tim and Ray, as well as myself would beg to differ. 😛
This is a test of the emergency commenting system.
It even looks like an emergency because its red.
I second that.
Hey, that’s what I say all the time! 🙂
This is a test of the Emergency [X] System, this is only a test. If this were real, I would be screaming right now. 😀 I much prefer it over the funky non word “laporium” or whatever thing.
Also, I seemed to have missed the comment rainbow period. Were the comment backgrounds colored, the outlines, or just the stars I see now?
Now that’s interesting. When I previewed my comment, it was in Ray’s box, but when I submitted it, it appeared under Ray’s box…
This comment is a reply to my nested comment inside my “emergency broadcast system” comment. This comment is previewed, while the comment I’m replying to was not.
(When I preview it, the titled above the comment box (which once said “Reply to Tustin2121” now say “Comment” in the preview page. This must be the problem – it’s losing the reply-to metadata when it previews.
Yeah, that’s a known issue. The more serious one is if you then go “oh, it’s not replying to that comment any more, I’ll click it again”, it empties the reply box so you lose whatever you typed.
If that happens, you should be able to click the back button, because the preview page’s POST data remembers what you typed, even though the reply to’s POST data may not. So you click back, copy the text, paste it in the next one, and click Post.
Actually, this clearing the comment thing is NOT as serious as the preview not remembering the reply to data, because the clearing the comment problem wouldn’t happen if the preview field remembered where it was posting to!
True, but what if you type something in and then decide you want it as a reply to somebody? It would still erase everything even without the separate Preview issue. So it’s more serious because you can trigger it under multiple circumstances. 😛
Also, in that case, you wouldn’t even have the Preview page to go back to. I don’t know enough about web programming to know if going back to the non-preview page would keep it, but I seem to remember at least once where I clicked back for whatever reason (possibly forgetting to put my login info in), and my post was gone.
Also, Tim, at least for me (Firefox 3.0), it looks like your site has turned into one of those annoying sites that never finishes loading… That spinner just keeps spinning. Firebug (hey, I’m a web developer, what can I say?) tells me that everything has loaded already, but that spinner just won’t quit!
Of course, while writing this comment, the loading FINALLY stopped… the timeout must have run out.
Ok, A few questions:
1. Are the comment borders supposed to be some color besides Ray’s and Tim’s? I am seeing a lot of comments about green and yellow, but no green or yellow.
2. The text size and font of the site all changed. was that supposed to happen, or is my browser just doing funky things?
1. No, I didn’t like the way the borders looked, so I scrapped the idea in favor of the stars. Hopefully Ray makes a much better ‘badge’ for premium members as the star was just something I found online.
2. Yes, I’m aware of the text size changes. I may tweak them a bit or I may just wait to see if we all get used to it.
Suggestions for new badges:

5. http://smrpglegacy.com/v3-pmbadges.htm
6. http://tinypic.com/r/30mnvwy/3
I’m not really serious with any of these, but would be ecstatic to actually get one of these. XD
Okay, so I just made a comment with links for potential “badges” but that seems to not have come through, so I’ll just list the ideas I had instead of going to find the links again.
1. Starman
2. Screw Attack Symbol
3. Masterball
4. Phoenix Wright’s Attorney Badge
5. Any badge from Paper Mario
6. Rouge
XD
7. Triforce
8. Smash Ball
9. 2P Start! logo
I thought of the 2p Start logo, but I wasn’t quite sure how that would go over…considering the people that just joined or whatever have that as their avatar. I don’t know, it just seemed weird to me. But I like the other two, especially the Smash Ball.
Good point, that probably would be weird. I personally vote for a Smash Ball, but being a Zelda fan I had to point out your lack of a Zelda-related suggestion 😛
10. Tetris Block
11. Yoshi Egg
12. Pac-Man (considering the number of Pac-Man comics recently)
I like the idea of a Starman or Smash Ball.
Got to get in on this new commenting action
And here we have nested pandas!
Cool, I get a little gold star if I log in. Reminds me of the warm fuzzy feeling you get at primary school when the teacher slaps a gold star on a piece of homework 🙂
Something’s not quite right about the threaded comments, but I can’t put my finger on it. I think maybe it would help if the borders were a little softer in color.
It’s good to see the site improving, though. Now all we need is the edit feature back!
What are those stars for, by the way?
Judging by FluffyPanda’s post, it marks people who posted while logged in. (I don’t like logging in, because the “remember me” option doesn’t work for me.)
But what’s the point of being able to distinguish logged in users from others?
The star identifies “Premium” Members. Those are people who have been here for a while, posted regularly, and/or just shown dedication to the site in general.
Oh. That. I was hoping that wouldn’t actually happen when they first spoke of it, because of how objective and unfair that is.
Trying me some replyin’. And logging in.
I kinda wonder when the site will forget me again. I never clocked it.
Ok, I’ve changed it so that regardless of whether you were logged in, the star shows if you’re a premium member (which you now are Kvb).
yay! im a premium member!
I wouldn’t get too excited… look up at the thread 😉
There may as well be no star for premium members but a little (empty) grave for non premiums!
Haha. Yeah, it was 16 to begin with, now it’s like everyone! But oh well. 😀
yeah, i know, but i had to comment again. i think we should be able to choose our badge for premium status. id make mine either ghost of starman, or porky.
I like the colors Tim. the thing is, Ray is my favorite between the two of you. but then this commenting came along. Tim’s blue color makes him nice to talk to while Ray’s red makes me feel as though he is enraged. Tim just might steal a Ray fan.
Testing . . . testing . . . 1, 2, 3 . . . testing.
Aw. I don’t like not being a premium member, not one bit. Though I am more active on the forums than comments I’ve put on the comics…I wish I had something more clever to say for them.
Complaining aside, it seems as if the mods should get some kind of recognition. A ‘mod’ badge instead of a star, for instance. Though I’m not sure you can do that without adding a new kind of premium members. Super deluxe premium members, maybe?
Spiffy new look guys.
So, how are premium members decided?
Nice, I like this new comment system. Great job, Tim.
And yes, how do you become a premium member?
Tim explains it in the Free Wii 2nd Edition Podcast, but basically it’s determined by how long you’ve been on the site and how many comments you’ve posted. Comments, not forum posts.
Ok. Thanks for clearing that up, Roadj. 🙂
